Republican Compiler (Gettysburg, Pennsylvania) January 18, 1826
On the night of the 26th ult., a small frame house on the farm of Mr. William Johnston in Nicholas county, Ky., erected for the special accommodation of Mr. Joshua Taylor, a revolutionary soldier, was destroyed by fire. Mr. Taylor was so badly burnt that he survived but one hour. [Submitted by Nancy Piper; May 2010]

Aug. 18, 1855 — In Nicholas County, Ky., Gen. Thomas Metcalfe, aged 75. He was born in Virginia, March 20, 1780. When quite young, his parents removed to Kentucky. He served in the war of 1812, and in 1813 commanded with distinguished gallantry a company of infantry at the battle of Fort Meigs. He served in the Legislature of Kentucky for many years, and was a Representative in Congress from that State from 1819 to 1829. While a member of Congress he was elected Governor of Kentucky, which office he held until 1833. In 183-1 he was elected to the State Senate, and in 1840 made President of the Board of Internal Improvement. In 1843 he was appointed to fill Mr. Crittenden's unexpired term in the Federal Senate, and on his retirement from the Senate, in 1819, he went back to his farm, where, in the honor and respect of his fellow-citizens, he passed the remainder of his life.
