Caddo Parish, La Citizenship Record 32 Become Citizens in Court Here published in Shreveport Times 13 Nov 1842 Prior to being issued their citizenship papers the petitioners were given an inspiring lecture on the value of the gift being bestowed upon them by Federal Judge Gaston L Porterie who explained the system of free government and how freedom has been handed down through the years from one people to another. Judge Porterie gave a personal example of this handing process by stating that he, the son of naturalized citizens at the time, was passing on the blessing of liberty to those being granted citizenship. Italians, only recently classified as "alien enemies", composed the largest racial group among those given citizenship, 13 of the 32 being born in Italy. Others were from Poland, France, Russia, Norway, Yugoslavia, Canada, Austria, Germany, Syria, Ireland and England, according to John L Murff, examiner in attendance at the court.
