Wikipedia Nueva Iberia is located on the shores of Bayou Teche .The origin of the settlement is taken from the Spanish and Canary Islanders who came to the area to raise flax and hemp. On January 15, 1779 Governor Bernardo de Galvez sent Lieutenant Colonel Francisco Bouligny with Canary Island Colonists from Malaga, Spain to establish a settlement on the lower Bayou Teche in the Attakapas Country. Although nearly 500 people were involved in the migration, not all were from Malaga. Many Acadian exiles were among the first settlers. In 1788 a census lists 190 residents for " Nueva Iberia". The town, first called " Nueva Iberia" named after their homeland, and was laid out by Henri Frederic Duperier, a sugar planter, and incorporated in 1839. The name later was changed to "New Iberia". During a yellow fever epidemic. That same year a Negro slave named "Felicite" won immortal fame for her ministrations to the victims of yellow fever. During the Civil War the Bayou Teche area was occupied by Major General Nathaniel P. Banks. In 1868 the Parish of Iberia was formed and New Iberia became its seat.
