The same year he enlisted in the Confederate service as assistant surgeon of the Ninth Virginia Cavalry.  He served throughout the war, was twice wounded and was taken prisoner once, being confined at Johnston Island five weeks.  After the war he returned to Virginia where he practiced his profession until 1868, when he moved to St. Martin parish and took charge of his father’s plantation.  He resided in Mt.
