OAK RIDGE (AP) -- John S. "Duke" Barr III, a prominent northeastern Louisiana farmer who was past president of the National Cotton Council, was killed when his truck crashed into a tree, state police said Thursday.
Barr's pickup ran off a Richland Parish road for no apparent reason late Wednesday, investigators said. The truck hit a tree, and he was dead at the scene.
State troopers ordered an autopsy to see if Barr suffered a heart attack before the wreck, but it showed he died of multiple injuries from the wreck.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Oak Ridge United Methodist Church, followed by burial in the Oak Ridge Baptist Cemetery, with Mulhearn Funeral Home of Rayville in charge.

A one-time national "cotton producer of the year," Barr also was past president of the Louisiana Cotton Producers, and past chairman of the Northeast Louisiana Agri-Business Council.
Since he was named by President Nixon to a committee on farm safety, he has served on several national committees by presidential appointment.
