- April 1940 Recruit Depot, San Diego, California qualified for Sea School
- May 1940 for most of the month it's indicated he was a mailman then on the 25th he
was sent to Sea School posting San Diego CA
- June 1940 assigned to Marine detachment on the USS Arizona. Sailed from San Pedro
on USS Boise to Bremerton, WA. On the 14th to 21st on the muster rolls of USS Boise
- July 1940 he was on the muster rolls of the USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor Naval Yard
- August 1940 muster roll identified as Marine Detachment, U S S Argonne, Pearl Harbor
- Sept 1940 on muster roll of USS Arizona now in Long Beach CA
- October 1940 on muster roll of USS Arizona now in Bremerton WA. On the 12th promoted
to Private First Class
- November 1940 on muster roll of USS Arizona still in Bremerton WA From 11th to 30th
he had furlough
- December 1940 on muster roll of USS Arizona still in Bremerton WA From 1st to 5th
still on furlough

18. The census reports him born in Iowa
- According to Central Recruiting Division, 706 U S Court House Bldg, Chicago, Illinois
he was transferred from Des Moines Iowa to MCB San Diego, CA on Sept 11, 1940. He is number 868 on the list for
the month of September
- November 1940 he was assigned to Sea School Fourth Recruit Battalion, Recruit Depot,
Base Troops, MCB, San Diego, California
- December 1 and 2, 1940 on board the USS Enterprise for transport from Sea School
in San Diego to USS Arizona in Bremerton, WA

- On the 1930 census for Center township, Fayette Co, Iowa is Russel at age 8. All
members of his family are shown as born in Iowa.
- Between 1930 and 1940 the family moved to Minnesota. His father, Gary C Wittenberg,
living in Darwin, MN, was informed of his son's death

Harold Wyatt Hope was born 10 Jun 1922 in Ranger Co, TX.
His parents were Arthur Wesley Hope and Dora Bryan Harrison.
When Harold was at Texas Technological College he and some buddies drove over to Oklahoma and signed up for the
Marine Corp. |
The Amarillo Daily News (Amarillo, Texas), 19 Dec 1941 had a special note from Borger, TX quoting the wire recieved
by Mr and Mrs A W Hope reporting Harold missing in action
Harold Hope, a marine of the Class of ‘39, was killed at Pearl Harbor on December 7. He was the first World War
II casualty from Hutchinson County, TX
