Brooks Journalist, congressman, was born Nov. 10, 1810,
in Portland,
Maine. In 1839 he was elected to the state legislature of Maine;
and in 1836 established the New York Daily
Express, of which he was the chief editor and proprietor. In 1847
he was elected a member of the New York state legislature. In 1849-53 and
1863-73 he was a representative from New York City to
the thirty-first and thirty-second and the thirty-eighth to the
forty-second congresses. He died April 30, 1873, in Washington, D.C.
