Conflagration of Bowdoin College
On the 4th inst., Bowdoin College, at Brunswick in the state of Maine, was consumed to ashes.
The fire, which commenced in one of the upper stories, had made such progress before discovered, that it baffled
all exertions to save the building. By this unfortunate event, the students lost most of their books and
clothes, and are compelled to quarter upon the inhabitants of the town. President Allen has published an
effective appeal, it is hoped, for contributions to rebuild the college “to the generous friends of literature,”
and expresses a sanguine expectation “that the noble liberality, which has supported many valuable institutions
in our country, will sympathize with the distresses of this college, and will soon rear up the desolate and still
smouldering walls of Bowdoin.” – Frank Gaz.
