Mrs. Lucinda Otis

Died in Readfield, March 28, at the home of Miss M.A. Currier, Mrs. Lucinda, widow of the late Hiram Otis and mother of A.C. Otis, Esq. of Philadelphia, all of who were formerly, for several years, residents of Augusta.  Mrs. Otis was born in Salem, Franklin County, Maine, Sept. 21, 1822, and was the daughter of Robert Blake, a native of Mt. Vernon.  Mr. Blake was widely known as a leading and prosperous agriculturalist of Franklin County and was one of the first who broke the wilderness in the pioneer days, of that section of Maine.  With the characteristic energy of the true and hard son of the soil of that generation, he bravely faced and overcame the obstacles, privations and dangers, incident to primitive life.  From the spot where he made his first log cabin home, arose in after years, a substantial brick structure which ornamented one of the finest farms in northern Maine.  Here were reared his family of nine children, of whom Mrs. Otis was one of the eldest, and the younger of two daughters.  For a few years after her marriage, she resided in Kingfield , the native town of her husband.  Subsequently Mr. Otis purchased a valuable farm in Winthrop where, through excellent management they were rewarded with success.  Upon their retirement from active life they resided in Augusta.  After the death of her husband, Mrs. Otis passed remainder of her years in Readfield.  As a confirmed invalid, she received the tenderest and most faithful care in the home of Miss Currier, and added to this every comfort with which the devotion of a beloved son could surround her.  Mrs. Otis inherited strong mental characteristics, and though enfeebled in physical health, for more than half a century the wisdom of her judgment and counsel, was invaluable.  Especially was it felt in the home, her loved ones, the lasting influences of a substantial life work will bear witness.  Beside her son, the only child, above named Mrs. Otis is survived by two brothers, Rufus K. Blake, of Farmington and Daniel P. Blake of Frankfort, Indiana.  The late E.G. Blake of Farmington was also a brother of the deceased.
