A PIONEER OF MINNESOTA PASSES AWAY

Special to the Globe.
Northfield, Dec. 6.

Capt. Jesse Ames died this morning at 3 oclock of erysipelas.  His illness was of about a week's duration.  He was eighty-six years of age, having been born at Vinal Haven, Knox County Maine on Feb. 4, 1808.  Ames went to sea at fifteen years of age, and at twenty-three was master of a merchant vessel, and was engaged in a seafaring life until 1861.  In October, 1864, he bought the flouring mills at this place, which he operated for many years.  In 1868 he was elected to the state legislature and was a member of the national convention at Chicago, which nominated Grant for his first term.  At the time of his death he was vice president of the First National bank at this place.  Capt. Ames has two sons John T. Ames, who has lived here for many years and is widely known throughout the stae, and Gen. Adelbert Ames, now of Lowell, Mass.  His wife, who was a Miss Martha Tallman, and whom he married in 1832 survives him.
