Former Gov. McGraw of Washington Dead ?>Succumbs at Seattle to Typhoid Fever
After an Illness of Several Weeks
Seattle, June 23- Former Governor John H. McGraw
died at his home here tonight, after an illness of several weeks. Death was caused by typhoid
fever. John Harte McGraw was
born at Badger Plantation, Penobscot county, Maine, October 4, 1850. When he was little more than 2
years old his father was drowned, and when he was 14 he left home because
of a disagreement with his stepfather. In 1876 he came west, arriving in
San Francisco he worked at a horse car driver.
For several months after
his arrival on Puget sound he was a clerk in a local hotel, and finally
purchased a small establishment which he conducted until 1879, when the
building was destroyed by fire.
In quick succession he secured a position on the Seattle police
force, and was elected town marshal and was made chief of police, and in
1882 he was elected sheriff of King county. He was twice elected to succeed
himself.
In 1892 he was elected
governor of Washington, serving from 1893 to 1897. At the expiration of his term he
retired to private life, dividing his attention between his law practice,
banking affairs and business interests in Alaska
