DICKEY, ELEAZER B.
Recent Deaths
Eleazer B. Dickey, a revolutionary veteran, died in Monroe, Me., on the 8th inst., aged ninety-three years and three months. The services which Mr. Dickey, in his vigorous youth rendered to his country, as well as the merits of his character in after life, demand more than casual notice. There are passing few left who, in dying, will leave a similar record of their actions in the times when our infant colonies were struggling for a national existence. Mr. Dickey was born in Londonderry, N.H., (the town from which the original settlers from Belfast, Me., came,) in 1660. In 1773, he removed to Vassalbourg. In the year 1778, he voluntarily enlisted himself under the banners of his country, at a period when her fortunes seemed the darkest. In the army he did three years and nine months’ service, much of it under the immediate command of Washington. He was in many important engagements. It was a melancholy duty assigned to him, to assist at the execution of Major Andre, Oct. 2, 1780. In 1805, Mr. Dickey removed to the town of Monroe, where he resided till the day of his death, respected for the part he had taken in “the times that tried men’s souls,” as for his excellent qualities as a man and citizen. His descendants are very numerous, and nearly all of them reside in the county of Waldo. There have been fourteen children, one hundred and ten grand-children, one hundred and forty-five great grand-children, and two great-great grand-children. Mr. D. was always a democrat and voted for every candidate of his political faith, from Washington down to the election before the last. He was unable to go to the polls to vote for President Pierce. All his descendents to the present day, are sound democrats. Mary, consort of Mr. D., died May 9, 1852, aged eighty-six years. – Belfast Journal
