Miscellaneous Newspaper Gleanings
Baltimore, June 30, 1827
It affords us much pleasure to state that Lieut. Col. Long, Captain M’Neill and Dr. William Howard, the three U.S. Engineers who have been designated by the War Department to make the necessary reconnaissance of the country between Baltimore and the Ohio river, with a view of locating the proposed Rail Road have arrived in this city and yesterday attended a meeting of the Board of Directors. We are informed that the necessary arrangements are now maturing to enable these gentlemen to commence operations and we feel perfectly satisfied the work will be pursued with a zeal and application worthy of its magnitude and importance. The promptness with which the aid of these scientific gentlemen has been furnished is an evidence of the favorable light in which this great national object is regarded by the General Government; while the prudence and caution with which the Board of Directors are proceeding, is a guarantee that the capital of the Company will not be hazarded in visionary speculations. – American.
