Leah, Daniel Frederick, Oct. 7

Shocking Casualty

On Tuesday last, Mr. Daniel Leah, a young man of this city was killed by the accidental discharge of a gun while in the act, it is believed of drawing the load. The charge entered his left eye and passed out of the top of the head, leaving two perforations in his hat which last circumstance furnishes the presumption that the ramrod and ball both passed through the head. This belief is corroborated by the fact that the ramrod cannot be found. The accident happened in the yard, the report of the gun drew immediate attention and he was found prostrate and expiring. This dreadful occurrence while it demonstrated the awful truth that “in the midst of life we are in death,” ought to serve as an admonition to carefulness in handling loaded fire arms. – Citizen

McPherson, Millissent Fowler Washinton The Frederick Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution," met at the residence of the Historian this afternoon to honor the memory of Mrs. McPherson, who departed this life yesterday morning, November seventeenth, at her home in Frederick, Maryland. This illustrious lady was born in Lexington, Kentucky, August 4, 1824, and was married December 10, 1840, to Robert Grier McPherson, of this city. She was the daughter of William Temple and Margaret Fletcher Washington, and the granddaughter of George Steptoe Washington, of Virginia, and great-granddaughter of Colonel Samuel Washington, brother of the great Commanderin-Chief.

Miss Eugenia Washington, Recording Secretary-General, Daughters of the American Revolution, is a sister of the deceased. Mrs. John Ritchie, Regent, reported with sadness the death of the senior member of the Chapter, who was also a charter member. Mrs. Ritchie spoke with deep-felt words of the first death which has occurred in the Frederick Chapter, and of the irreparable loss of so valuable a member of an old historic family, distinguished in the annals of the United States. The personal gifts of Mrs. McPherson were rare and suggested her as a fitting representative in helping to preserve the truth of history and Revolutionary reminiscences.

All her life she was actively identified with the Protestant Episcopal church, of which she was a devout member. We rejoice in the hope of a "glorious reunion" in the City of the living God, in the general assembly and church of the Firstborn, whose names are written in heaven."

The Chapter published the following resolution :

Resolved, That, collectively and individually, the Frederick Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution express their profound sorrow for the death of their beloved friend and honored member, and tender to the bereaved family their sincerest sympathy.

Resolved, To send a token of love-—a wreath of flowers, composed of ivy leaves and sweet-scented roses, white and purelooking—suggestive of the holy dead and of immortality.

Shriver, David Sen. Another Sage of the Revolution Gone

Died at his residence on the Little Pipe Creek, near Westminster , Frederick county, Md. , on Saturday night the 29th ult., David Shriver, Sen., Esq., in his 91st year. He closed his useful and honorable life in peace with all men and in the cheering prospect of a blessed immortality.

He was a native of Adams County , Pa , born in Conowago Township , near Littlestown, (of which his parents were among the first settlers,) from whence he removed and settled on the place where he died. It was the lot of Mr. Shriver, whose parents were humble, to be left to his own unaided power in the acquirement of knowledge; taught by his parents the bare elements of language and debarred by his situation the bland influence of society; the attainment of Mr. Shriver in the Mechanic Arts, Science of Mathematics and general information is considered immense.

When the troublesome period of the Revolution came round, he was one of Freedom’s active partisans and was one of the two only surviving members of the Convention, which established the declaration of rights and Constitution of the State of Maryland . More than once was he warned that “King George’s men” had set a price on his head but he continued his exertions as one of the Committee of Safety until all danger was past.

He served as a member of the Assembly of Maryland upwards of 29 years; also of the Senate a number of years until a paralysis made it necessary that he should vacate his seat. He was plain and most tenacious in his manners and highly esteemed by his neighbors. He provided by his Will for the liberation of all his slaves, upwards of thirty in number – the younger to serve for a term of years and those advanced in age, have a livelihood secured. – Communicated
