The Family Tree

By Charlotte Lydia (McKeen) Mellen
(1904-1999)

(Judah, Lillian, Samuel E., Samuel Jr, Samuel Sr. Jonathan, Samuel, Isaac)

Charlotte is the wife of Judah Mellen, married June 29, 1928

I regret that I did not ask my mother more about our family tree. I was depending on newspaper clippings she had kept. However, the information is quite inadequate.

My great, great grandmother, Mrs. Laura Tullar, was residing in Stockbridge Massachusetts at the time I was born. At that time she was eighty-four years of age.

My great grandmother, Aimee Paula Hutchinson was sixty years of age and a resident of Lenon, Massachusetts.

My grandmother Charlotte Lewis, a resident of 305 St. Ann's Ave. New York City was forty-one years old.

My mother Aimee L. McKeen was residing at 307 St. Ann's Ave. New York City was twenty-two years of age.

My forebears were very proud when I was born because I was the fifth generation. I was named Charlotte after my mother's mother and Lydia after my father's mother whom I never saw. She died when my father was 12 years of age.

Shortly after my birth (March 14, 1904) a five-generation picture was taken. I am sorry I do not have more information about great, great grandmother Laura Tellar. She had a daughter, Paulina.

Paulina Williams/ Hutchinson (1844-1925)

My great grandmother, Paulina was born in West Stockbridge in 1844. While she was still an infant her family moved to Sheffield and later to Interlaken, MA. She had been a resident there since she was thirteen years of age. She was twice married. Her first marriage to Herbert W. Williams of Interlaken took place in Chatham, NY during the year 1862. She had a daughter, Charlotte Williams (my grandmother) born March 7, 1863. Another daughter Minnie ( no dates) and a son Edson Williams born in Interlake, Oct. 19. 1868. Sixteen years later, in 1878 she was married to James Hutchinson of New Lenox, the ceremony being performed at the Methodist Chapel in Lenox. I don't know when her husband passed away. When Paula was 71 she went to live with her daughter Minnie who was married to Charles Watkins who managed Flinstone Farm in Dalton, MA.

Later she moved with them to Orleton Farm in Stockbridge, MA, where he managed the estate for the Proctor family associated with Proctor and Gamble Company. This was a summer home for the Proctors. They had a separate residence from Uncle Charles. Aunt Minnie and Uncle Charles had no children.

Great Grandma passed away May 18, 1925, aged 81 and was buried in Stockbridge Cemetery. Rev. C. Williams Fisher, minister of the Congregational church officiated, assisted by Rev. John T. Trowbridge of Interlaken. The bearers were Edson Williams of Interlaken (a son), Charles E., Watkins of Stockbridge and Frank E. Lewis, sons-in-law and W. C. Antell of Great Barrington, MA

Charlotte (Williams) Lewis (1863-?)
Grandma Charlotte Williams Lewis was a native of Interlaken and was born March 7, 1863, daughter of Albert Williams and Paulina Tullar Williams. Before her marriage she was organist at the Interlaken Congregational Church. She was a member of Collina Chapter and Order of Eastern Star. She spent the greater part of her life in Pittsfield, MA. She was a member of the Benevolent Society of the church, which she attended.

Grandma Charlotte was married in Interlaken to Frank E. Lewis, Jan 15, 1885. Her husband worked for the New York New Haven and Hartford Railroad Company for 21 years. For eight years he was a passenger conductor. They lived in New York City for 18 years, and also resided in Hartford and Springfield.

Grandpa Lewis was a member of Mystic Lodge, Order of Masons and of the Order of Railway Conductors. He was the conductor of the special train, which brought President Theodore Roosevelt to Pittsfield in 1902. It was during his stay in this city that President Roosevelt was the central figure in a sensational trolley-car accident in which his secret-service guard, William Craig, lost his life when the carriage in which the President was riding struck by a car of Pittsfield Street Railway Company. It was near the Country Club of Pittsfield while they were driving from Pittsfield to Lenox.

Sometime earlier Grandma and Grandpa moved to Panama where he was a conductor for a few years. Their lifestyle was quite different. I saw a picture of their screened bungalow, which was quite attractive. Far awhile she had a pet monkey. Grandpa was well paid for his job. After a few years they were glad to return to the States. A few years before his death, he worked as doorman at the Capitol Theater in Pittsfield, MA.

You may wonder what caused his passing away. He was afraid that there would not be enough money for both of them to continue to live comfortably. On the spur of the moment he shot himself in the bedroom. What a terrible shock for poor grandma! After he did it he told her he was sorry. He really suffered plenty before he died.
