Name Changes in Hampshire County

An act to change the name of William Shelden, of Hadley, in the county of Hampshire, to the name of Giles Crouch Kellogg.  Whereas Enos Smith, of Hadley, in the county of Hampshire, guardian to William Shelden, of said Hadley, a minor, hath petitioned this court, that the name of the said William Shelden may be changed and altered to the name of Giles Crouch Kellogg, and the said William Shelden hath desired the same: Therefore, Be it enacted, etc., as follows: That from and after the passing of this act, the said William Shelden shall be, and hereby is authorized and impowered to take, use and bear the name of Giles Crouch Kellogg instead of the name of William Shelden, and to be called and known by that name forever hereafter. (June 4, 1795)

An act to change the names of Billy Hager, Silvanus Coleman the third, Alexander McLeod Clark, John Tyler, Rodolphus Stratton, James Allen, and John Parkman.  Be it enacted, etc., as follows: That from and after the passing of this act, Billy Hager, of Marlborough, in the county of Middlesex, son of William Hager, of said Marlborough, shall be allowed to take the name of William Hager; that Silvanus Coleman, the third of that name, of Nantucket, in the county of Nantucket, son of Jonathan Coleman, of said Nantucket, shall be allowed to take the name of Davis Coleman; the Alexander McLeod Clark, of Medfield, in the county of Norfolk, son of Elias Clark, of said Medfield, shall be allowed to take the name of Alexander Clark; that John Tyler, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, son of John Tyler, late of Mendon, in the county of Worcester, deceased, shall be allowed to take the name of John Eugene Tyler; that Rodolphus Stratton, of Northfield, in the county of Hampshire, shall be allowed to take the name of Adolphus Smith; that James Allen of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, son of Thomas Allen, of Pasquetank county, in the state of North Carolina, shall be allowed to take the name of James Armour Allen; and that John Parkman, of said Boston, son of William Parkman, of Concord, in the county of Middlesex, shall be allowed to take the name of John Augustus Parkman; and said persons shall in future be respectively known and called by the names which they are respectively allowed to take as aforesaid, and the same shall be considered as their only proper names, to all intents and purposes.  (March 7, 1801)

An act to change the name of Bela Nichols.  Be it enacted, etc., as follows: That Bela Nichols, of Springfield, in the county of Hampshire, printer, be and he hereby is allowed to take the name of Francis D. Nichols; and that he shall in future be known and called by the name of Francis D. Nichols, and the same shall be considered as his proper name to all intents and purposes.  (November 21, 1804)

That Emily Olds, of Cummington, may take the name of Emily Read

that Experience Amanda Cooley, of Prescott, may take the name of Mary Jane Amanda Cooley

that Betsey Brewster, of Worthington, may take the name of Elizabeth M. Brewster

that James Dickson Benjamin, of Worthington, minor son of Alvah Benjamin, deceased, may take the name of Alvah Dickson Benjamin

that Calvin Mitchell, of Enfield, may take the name of Marcus Milton Mitchell

that George Mitchell, of Enfield, may take the name of George W. Mitchell

that Ashley Washington, of Amherst, may take the name of George Washington; all of the county of Hampshire.

An act to change the names of persons therein mentioned.  Be it enacted, etc., as follows:

That Marshall Comee Moody, of Grancy, may take the name of Marshall Heman Moody

that Chester Cowles, 2d, of Amherst, may take the name of Chester W. Cowles

that Wright Dickinson, of Amherst, may take the name of Edward Wright Dickinson

that Charles Sinkler Brakenridge, of Ware, may take the name of William Sinkler Brakenridge; all of the county of Hampshire.

Henry Graves, of Northampton, may take the name of Henry Graves Moore

Cyrus M. Bartlett, of Worthington, may take the name of Cyrus M. Parsons

Sedate Manly Thayer, of Northampton, may take the name of Manly Sedated Thayer

Edward McIntire, of Springfield, may take the name of Edward West

Sarah Burnell, of Northampton, may take the name of Sarah Burnell Breck

Medad Russell Wright, of Easthampton, may take the name of Russell Medad Wright

John Smith, of Amherst, may take the name of Hervey John Smith

Lewis Joy of Amherst, may take the name of Lewis Everet Joy, all of the county of Hampshire.

Carlo Howe, of Granby, may take the name of Carlos Howe

Sarah Cleaveland, minor, of Williamsburg, may take the name of Sarah Luann Cleaveland

Charles Ferry, of Granby, may take the name of Charles Sherman Ferry

Melancton Hamilton Hyde, of Ware, may take the name of Hamilton Hyde

Alvan A. Garside, of South Hadley, may take the name of Alvan White Alvord

Laura Bacon, a minor, of Ware, may take the name of Amelia Salome Eddy

Diantha C. Lee, a minor, of Northampton, may take the name of Cornelia Frances Lee; all of the county of Hampshire.

Reuben Pierce, of Northampton, may take the name of Henry Reuben Pierce

Charles Judd Bridgman, of Northampton, a minor, may take the name of Charles Judson Bridgman; all of the county of Hampshire.
