Thomas Saltmarsh, who was an innkeeper of Watertown, Mass., from 1734 to 1769. He
received various appointments to town offices. His wife was Mary Hazen. His children
born at Watertown:
 
1. William Saltmarsh b. Jan 20, 1734-5; was a soldier at Lake George in 1758. He m.
Dec 9, 1760, Elizabeth Patterson and settled first at New Canaan, Columbia Co., N.Y.,
and afterwards moved to the Susquehanna River, below Owego and died there at an ad-
vanced age.  Children:
 
1. William Saltmarsh b. at Watertown October, 1761; m. Esther Olmstead of Canaan,
Columbia County, New York; moved to Lawrenceburg, Indiana.  Children:
 
     1. Samuel Saltmarsh b. about 1786; resided near Lawrenceburg.
 
     2. William Saltmarsh b. about 1788; died at Louisville, Kentucky, leaving 2 sons.
     3. Esther Saltmarsh b. about 1790; m. (1) ____Boardman. She m. (2) Dr. Comstock
     and resided at Joliett, Will County, Illinois.
 
     4. John Saltmarsh b. about 1792; res. at Lawrenceburg, Indiana.
 
     5. Alanson Saltmarsh b. at Greene County, New York on October 8, 1794. From the
     age of ten to twenty-one years, he resided with Mr. Nathan Barton, his uncle,
     at New Haven, Vermont; went through a course of medical studies, under Doctors
     Lyman and Gridley, the latter being President of the Medical Society of Vermont.
     He went to Alabama, relinquished his profession and was for more than twenty
     years Register of the Land Office in Cahaba in that State, where he resided and
     was a wealthy planter. He m. May 4, 1826, Mary Ann Beck, the eldest dau. of John
     Beck & his wife, Margaret (King) Beck, the eldest dau. of John Beck and his wife,
     Margaret King, a sister of the Honorable William R. King, Vice President of the
     United States.  Children:
 
               1. Margaret Saltmarsh
               2. John Saltmarsh
               3. Mary Saltmarsh who died at the age of 10 yrs.
                      And five others who died in infancy.
 
2. John Saltmarsh born at Watertown, Mass., October 9, 1763; settled at Tioga Point,
New York. He married and had a dau., Eliza Saltmarsh and two sons, Dr. Alanson Salt-
marsh and Orlando Saltmarsh.  Dr. Allanson Saltmarsh & Orlando Saltmarsh were large
mail contractors in North and South Carolina and also in Georgia. Dr. Alanson Salt-
marsh became engated in this business in Texas.
 
3. Elizabeth Saltmarsh was born at Watertown, Mass. She m. ____Klum, formerly of
Vergennes, Vermont and moved to Indiana. They had many descendants.
 
4. Sally Saltmarsh who m. ____ Newell and res. at Broome County, New York.
 
5. A daughter ____ Saltmarsh who m. ____ Wilson and res. in or near Oswago, N.H.
 
6. Rebecca Saltmarsh who m. Nathan Barton of New Haven, Vermont; both died leaving
a son:
               1. Walter Barton who resided in New Haven.

7. Mary Saltmarsh who m. December 13, 1795, John Howell, a son of John Howell,
descended from a family supposed to be of Welch origin, long settled on the east
end of Long Island, New York and his wife, Mehitable Jessup, also of Long Island.
Their children, all born at Greene Co., New York:
      1. John Saltmarsh Howell b. Nov 2, 1796; died at Little Rock, Arkansas on
      February 13, 1845.
      2. Horace Howell who m. Caroline, a dau. of General Carpenter of Tioga County,
      New York and resided at Rushville, Yates Co.  children:
           1. Elija C. Howell.
           2. Sarah Howell.
           3. George Howell.
           4. Horace Frederick Howell.
      3. Orson Valentine Howell, died at Little Rock, Arkansas, Jan. 31, 1834.
      4. Federick Kortz Howell, who res. at Southampton, Long Island, N.Y.; m.
      Nancy Jessup of Long Island.
      5. Philo Howell, who married Margaret Lindsey of Pulaski Co., Arkansas.
      6. Thomas Jessup Howell, a physician, res. at Cahaba, Dallas Co., Alabama;
      was unmarried in 1852.
      7. Elizabeth Mary Howell who m. Samuel H. Webb and moved to Little Rock and
      died there February 3, 1846.
      8. Abigail Howell who m. Isaac Boardman and res. below Oswego, New York on
      the Susquehanna.

3. John Saltmarsh b. Nov 29, 1738.
4. Abigail Saltmarsh b. May 9, 1740.
5. Deborah Saltmarsh b. Sept 16, 1742.
6. Catherine Saltmarsh b. Nov 2, 1744.
7. Seth Saltmarsh b. Dec 4, 1746; by his wife, Ruth had one child:
         1. Mary Saltmarsh b. at Watertown, Jan. 16, 1770.
8. Isaac Saltmarsh b. July 28, 1748.
 
Elizabeth Saltmarsh who m. March 8, 1753, Jedediah Spring.
Mary Saltmarsh who m. June 5, 1755, Abijah Hammond of Newton, Mass.
These were prabably daughters of Thomas & Mary Saltmarsh, born before they settled
at Watertown.

Thomas Saltmarsh (1) was a sea-captain, born in England. He m. (1) Mary Hazen, a dau.
of Richard & Mary (Peabody) Hazen of Boxford, and settled at Charlestown, Mass. where
his oldest two children, Mary (who was bapt. June 6, 1731) and Elizabeth (who was
baptized June 10, 1733. About 1734, he moved to Watertown where he was a Constable
in 1743 and the Assessor in 1741, 1742 & 1745. He m. (2) in 1769, Anne, the widow
of Abijah Stone and a daughter of John Jones of Framingham.
 
William Saltmarsh was a Lieutenant under Captain Jonathan Brown at Lake George in
1758.

Thomas Saltmarsh, Jr. m. in 1759 Betsey Abbott b. Aug 25, 1743, a dau. of Edward
and Dorcas Chandler Abbott of Concord, New Hampshire. He died 1826, and she died
1827. Children:
        1. Mehitable Saltmarsh b. 1762; died 1814; m. 1784, James Hoit.
        2. Salley Saltmarsh.
        3. Betsey Saltmarsh
        4. Eliphalet Saltmarsh
        5. Thomas Saltmarsh b. 1774 was of Guilford, New Hampshire; m. Catherine
           Abbott.
        6. Peaslee Saltmarsh.
        7. Elnathan Saltmarsh.
