Massachusetts Poor House Commitments and Removals

Removals Oct. 1897 - Sept. 30, 1898

"If a state pauper who has received a permit from the overseers of the poor of a city or town to become an inmate of the state almshouses expresses a preference to be pent to any state or place where he has a legal settlement, or friends willing to support him! the hoard may remove said pauper, instead of committing him, if in its judgment the interest of the commonwealth and of the pauper will be promoted thereby; but no person shall be so removed, unless, in the judgment of said overseers and of the board, be will become a charge to the state for at least one year; and the board shall return, in its annual report, the names of all persons so removed, the places whence removed, and the cost of each removal."
