     The veteran town-clerk, Josiah Flagg, in transcribing the subjoined list of births upon pages 198, 199 and 200 of Book 1, prefaced it with this statement:
     The following is a true copy of a record taken from a leaf of an ancient Record Book 2hich 1 found among the papers of the late Capt. Hezekiah Gates, who died about fifty years ago.
     LANCASTER, March 28th, 1826

     The aged manuscript is in the neat handwriting of Ralph Houghton, the first Clerk of Lancaster.  A photographic reproduction of the first page, in lineal dimensions two-thirds the size of the original, is herewith presented.
