CLIFFORD HARRY CARTWRIGHT , age 69, passed away Thursday afternoon, December 11, 2008 at the Long Term Care Unit of War Memorial Hospital. Cliff was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan on February 6, 1939. He was a resident of Brimley and attended Superior High School. In his younger years, he worked for the Ranger Station planting trees. He also worked for Northern Linen. After driving school bus for 22 years he retired. Cliff loved being outdoors, hunting and fishing. He also loved collecting guns and playing his guitar. Cliff Cartwright was preceded in death by his parents: Harry and Mary (Sheilds) Cartwright of Brimley, MI; his grandparents: Henry and Elizabeth (Bonholzer) Shields of Dollar Settlement, MI and Otto and Mary (Buck) Cartwright of Dafter, MI, as well as many aunts and uncles. He was survived by two sisters: E. Elaine Cartwright of Brimley, MI and Mary Ann (Lajoice) Charles of Dollar Settlement, MI; one Nephew: Steven (Stacy) Charles of Dollar Settlement, MI; and one great nephew: Waylon W. Charles of Dollar Settlement, MI. He is also survived by an uncle: George Shields of Dollar Settlement, MI.

RUSSELL CHARTIER , 70, will be recited at 7 p.m. tomorrow in St. Agnes' Roman Catholic Church, where a Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Friday. Goodbody Mortuary is in charge. He died yesterday in a hospital. Mr. Chartier, a native of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., and a 42-year county resident, owned the Chartier Painting Co. and was a past president of the San Diego Chapter of the Painting Contractors Association. His company painted the U.S. Grant, San Diego and El Cortez hotels, Immaculata Catholic Church and many buildings in Balboa Park. He had been an apprenticeship consultant to the state Board of Education and secretary of the Boosters Club of the University of San Diego. He was an active member and an usher at St. Agnes' for 42 years and had been treasurer of the St. Agnes Mission Circle and a member of the Holy Name Society, the Downtown Rotary Club, the Sierra Club and Toastmasters International. Survivors include his wife, Martha; three sons, Jim and Leon, both of San Diego, and Bill of San Francisco; four daughters, Dolores Brock of La Mesa, Carolynn Gilb of El Cajon, Patricia Halpin of Seattle and Yvonne, of Kauai, Hawaii; three brothers, Melvin, Bill and Clarence, all of San Diego; a sister, Fern Terrell of Appleton, Wis.; and 11 grandchildren.

WILLIAM F. CODY , known as "Bill" Cody (Sir William of Tone), age 63, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, died Thursday, November 30, 2006, at the University of Michigan Hospital after suffering a heart attack. He was born January 5, 1943, in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, to Art Cody and Earla Cody. A lifelong Sault resident, Bill attended Pickford Public School and participated in track and cross country. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1961 and was stationed at Ft. Hood, TX and spent time at Ft. Stewart, Georgia. He enjoyed spending time outside working on his property, exercising, taking care of his dogs and socializing with friends. Bill could be seen early in the morning walking M-129 or at the Wal Mart in the Sault as an unofficial greeter. Bill's true passion was hunting deer and he was good at it, taking many large whitetail bucks throughout his lifetime. Bill was survived by his best friend Gladys Jarvie of Kinross, Michigan. Also surviving were one sister, Carla (Dave) Lapointe and one brother, Terry (Kathy) Lajoie, his Aunt Leota Williams and his Aunt Edith Celestino ,as well as, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.


ALFRED E. CURTIS , 72, Dafter supervisor died at the War Memorial Hsp. Sunday Jan. 29, 1933, at 5:50 p.m. after an illness of three weeks. Mr. Curtis had been a resident of Chippewa County for 45 years and a member of the board of supervisors for 23 years. He also served two years as chairman of the board. Born in Fulton Co. OH Sept. 9, 1860, he moved to Ionia county in 1867 where he lived on a farm with his parents until 1888 when he went to Missouri for several months. During that year he moved back to Michigan and was in business in various sections of Chippewa county and then settled on a farm in Dafter.
