HENRY DAY , one of the Saults last links with a glamorous past was found dead in bed at his cabin Friday morning by neighbors - the victim of a heart attack. He was about 79 years old and the Sault's oldest mail runner, had been living a quiet life in his cabin on 10th avenue east near the Shunk road. There he lived on a government pension and kept busy by tending a small garden. Henry Day was born in 1858 in the historic Barbeau home on Portage the son of the famous wheelsman of the old boat Independence which blew up five years before Henry's birth at her pier above the rapids. In the days before the railroad, Day was at times the Sault's main link to communication. There was a stage rout in those days but during the spring breakup and at other times when the state couldn't get through it was Day who took off on snowshoes for Point St. Ignace for the mail. For the sum of $30 for returning the mail from St. Ignace Henry would shoulder a 185 pound sack of mail and make the 65 mile jog in from eight to ten hours. Once when the bridge washed out at Pine River he got across anyhow and received $50 for the trip. Besides being a sailor and mail carrier, Henry was from time to time a prospector along the north shore of Lake Superior, a lumberjack and a camp cook. He once was Wheelsman of the M.S. (Mighty Slow) Trempe owned by Louis P. Trempe and named after his daughter Marie Sophie Trempe. Day last appeared before the limelight last winter during the Sportsman's parade when he appeared as one of the Sault's first mail carriers.
