They later changed their name to Fish then Fisher. (Erysipelas - Contagious skin disease, due to Streptococci with vesicular and bulbous lesions).

HUGH FOSTER died at his home on Sugar Island Saturday morning at the age of 86 years. The funeral took place today from the home, internment being on the Island. The deceased was one of the pioneer residents of Chippewa County, coming here 56 years ago and settling on Sugar Island, where he continued to reside until his death. He was born in Scotland and at an early age was engaged by the Hudson Bay Fur Company as its shoemaker at James Bay. The trip across the ocean to the James Bay station was made in an old sailing vessel and several weeks were committed in making the trip, severe storms which threatened to wreck the ship being encountered during the voyage. Mr. Foster remained with the Company for ten years, the time for which he was originally engaged, when he came to the Soo and from here he went to the Island. Up to 1887 when the South Shore Line was extended to the Soo, Mr. Foster had never seen a railroad train and it is said that he had never been 5 miles from home since he settled in this county. His wife died several years ago, but he is survived by a number of children and grandchildren, residents of the county, among whom is a son Capt. George Foster of this city.

NANCY (MOORE) FOSTER , of Sugar Island, one of the pioneers of the county, is dead at the age of 80 years. She leaves a husband, who is 90 years old. In the death of Mrs. Foster Northern Michigan loses one of its most interesting characters. Mr. and Mrs. Foster were married at Hudson Bay in ’56 and soon after came to Sugar Island, tramping all the way over land. Through all the years that have intervened since the time they first set foot on this fertile garden spot in the St. Mary’s river and the present day the Fosters have been known as the most famous people of that locality. Mr. Foster was a native of Scotland, coming from that country about 60 years ago.

One of the most interesting things connected with their life on the Island is their lack of knowledge concerning the outside world. Although year after year they have seen modern vessels passing up and down the river, they have never ridden on a steamboat or traveled on a train. Mrs. Foster closed her eyes in that last, long sleep that sooner or later comes to all mankind without having felt the influence of the great wide world teeming with the excitement of commerce and society. She will be long remembered as one of the quaint characters of a region that has had much to do with the making of the history of the great northwest. Sugar Island has lost one of its most valuable citizens.
Contributed by Barbara Halloran - Note: Nancy Moore married Hugh Foster about 1846 not 56. They came to Sugar Island about 1854.
