VEDA MARIE (PAWLEY) SADLER
, age 94 of Seney died on Friday evening, April 7, 2006 surrounded by her family at Harbour View Assisted Living in Munising. Veda was born on March 20, 1912 to Albert and Charlotte (Durno) Pawley in Pickford, Michigan. She graduated from the
Loretto Academy in Sault Ste. Marie. Veda married Earl “Pat” Sadler in Mason City Iowa on November 9, 1929. They moved to Seney and built Pat’s Market which they ran for 40 years. She was also a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service in Seney for 33 years. Veda was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church in Germfask. In her younger years, Veda loved fishing and hunting with her sons. She also enjoyed watching her grandsons and great-grandsons wrestle. Most of all she treasured her time with her family, especially at Driggs Lake. She was truly and “kid magnet” and will be remembered by many generations in Seney for her hugs and special treats.
Veda was preceded in death by her husband Pat in 1985, her three sons, Pat in 2002, Mike in 2003, and Don in 2006, one infant grandchild, Patrick Lyle, Jr., a great-granddaughter Candance Sadler, and brothers Melborn and Lyle Pawley. Veda is survived by three daughters-in-law - Peggy Sadler of Munising, Ann Sadler of Marquette and Geraldine Wright of Valdosta, GA; sixteen grandchildren - Cindy (Tom) Killips of Munising, Pat (Becky) Sadler of Wetmore, Don (Kelly) Sadler of Gladstone, Ron (Julie) Sadler of Indianapolis, IN, Chris (Joanne) Sadler of Wetmore, Shawn (Traci) Sadler of Wetmore, Billy (Barb) Niswonger of Merriam, KS, Duane Sadler of Valdosta, GA, Devi (Ed) Sharp of Valdosta, GA, Darla (Jeff) King of Hesperia, CA, Richard (Bonnie) Sadler of Kingsford, MI, Michael Sadler of Atmore AL, Debra (Doug) Liberty of Marquette, Lorrie (Greg) McAuliffe of Marquette, Cathy (Dave) DeRocher of Marquette, and Sherry (David) Dodendorf of Leslie, MI, 38 great grandchildren; 8 great-great grandchildren; niece Lois (Jim) Wick of University Place, WA, and cousin - Bertha Houghton of Manistique.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated by Father Tim Hruska and Father Joy Adimakeel on Tuesday, April 11, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Therese Catholic Church in Germfask. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday until 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Germfask Township Riverside Cemetery. Veda will be escorted by great-grandchildren: Michael, Melissa, and Angela Sadler, Scott and Valerie Killips, and Chelsea Wallner.
ELIZABETH E. SAYRE
, 90, who escaped from the Philippines after the fall of Bataan and Corregidor during World War II, and a former president of the Woman's National Democratic Club, died of kidney failure Nov. 14 at the Carriage Hill nursing home in Bethesda.
Mrs. Sayre went to the Philippines in 1939 when her husband, Francis B. Sayre Sr., took up his appointment as high commissioner to the islands, then a U.S. possession. The Sayres were trapped with U.S. troops on Bataan, a peninsula near Manila, and Corregidor, an island fortress in Manila Bay, after the Japanese invaded in December 1941. They eventually escaped to Australia aboard a submarine.
She later accompanied her husband to the United Nations, where he was an ambassador and president of the U.N. Trusteeship Council.
A native of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Mrs. Sayre graduated from Agnes Scott College near Atlanta. She moved to Washington in 1915 and the city had been her main residence since then. During World War I she worked in military intelligence with the old War Department.
Later in life she was a member of the board of the International YWCA. She also was active in the U.N. Children's Emergency Fund.
Her first husband, Ralph A. Graves, assistant editor of the National Geographic Magazine, died in 1932. She married Mr. Sayre in 1937. He died in 1972.
Survivors include two sons by her first marriage, Ralph Graves of New York City and William Graves of Washington; two stepsons, the Very Rev. Frances B. Sayre Jr., a former dean of the Washington Cathedral, of Bethesda, and Woodrow W. Sayre of Martha's Vineyard, Mass., and a stepdaughter, Eleanor A. Sayre of Boston.
CHARLES E. SCHEPPERLEY
, of the Birch Shores Peninsula in Trout Lake was a former machinist who worked for Jerry's Tool and Die in Gaylord until His retirement in 1997.
Mr. Schepperley died at the age of 71 Saturday, August 19, at Mackinac Straits Long Term Care in St. Ingnce.
He was born in Mancelona May 16, 1935, to James and Verna (nee Bonner) Schepperley.
He lived in Gaylord until 2003, when he and his family moved to Trout Lake, where they had owned a home since 1990. He loved to fish and hunt, and was called a 'family man' by his friends.
He married Sonja Boyd in Mancelona March 16, 1957, and she survives.
Mr. Schepperley is also survived by a daughter, Anne, one son and his family, Charles and Jayne Schepperley of Seattle, Washington and Traverse City, Harry and Marion Schepperley of Bellaire,and Clare and Geraldine Schepperley of Livonia.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Gordon and Arlie Schepperley, and a sister, Elsie Romanik.
A memorial service will be Saturday, September 9, at Grace Brethren Church in Ozark. Pastor Chip Jones will be announced at a later date.
Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Trout Lake.
Dodson Funeral Home of St. Ignace assisted the family with arrangements.
JOYCE H. (WOMBLE) SEEM
, 91, of Dowagiac, began life on July 2, 1916, in Michigan City, IN, the daughter of Homer and Mabel (Lambka) Womble. Her family moved to the area in 1921 and she had lived here ever since.
Joyce graduated from Niles High School in 1934. She was united in marriage to Henry D. Seem on February 17, 1940, in South Bend. Joyce was a member of the North Wayne Mennonite Church and enjoyed being a homemaker.
She was a wonderful mother, wife, grandma and a cheerful soul to all. Her loving family includes her daughter, Bonnie (Ralph) Mullard of Vestaburg, MI, and her son, Ronald (Ronni) Seem of Cassopolis; six grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; and two sisters-in-law, Jessie and Evelyn Womble, both of Niles.
Joyce passed away on February 24, 2008, in the Cass County Medical Care Facility. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry, and three brothers, Charles, Robert and Clinton Womble.
Her family will receive friends on Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. in the McLauchlin-Clark Funeral Home. Graveside services will immediately follow the visitation at Mission Hills Cemetery, Niles. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Cass County Council on Aging.
HORACE HARMON SEYMOUR
, died at Mrs. Ruby's boarding house, on Ridge Street, Sault Ste Marie, MI at 10 o'clock Thursday morning. The immediate cause of death was rheumatism of the heart, but for some time he had been afflicted with consumption. He was 21 years old last October and had been associated with Harvey's marine bureau for two years. He was a son of Rev. Edward Seymour, who was rector of the Episcopal church in this city in 1884. Horace Seymour was a bright young man, always attentive to his duties, and a general favorite with all who knew him. His many friends are sorely grieved at his death. Funeral services were held at the Episcopal church yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock, after which the remains were taken to the depot, followed by a large number of sorrowing friends. His brother Frank, of Newberry, was with him during his last hours, and took the body to Ashtabula Harbor, O., for interment.
JOHN SIEGWART , age 56, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan passed away Thursday morning, October 26, 2006 at Tendercare Nursing Home after a courageous battle with cancer. John was born on July 11, 1950 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. He enjoyed working on cars as a body repairman. His favorite hobby was assembling model cars. He is survived by two sons; Joel P. Siegwart and Wally K. Siegwart both of Sault Ste. Marie, MI, his parents; Kenneth and Florence (Elliott) Siegwart, Sr. of Sault Ste. Marie, MI, a brother; Darrell (Anne) Siegwart of Sault Ste. Marie, MI, and two sisters; Sue (Bill) Ayers of Sault Ste. Marie, MI and Debbie (Ben) Musielak of Paradise, MI. He is also survived by his former wife; Karla Siegwart of Sault Ste. Marie, MI, his “sister”; Lisa (Frank) Killips of Sault Ste. Marie, MI and seven nieces and nephews; Bill, Ken, Mary, and Roger Ayers, and Cody, Sherese, and Trish Siegwart. He was preceded in death by his brother; Kenneth Siegwart, Jr. A memorial service will be held from 1 until 4 p.m. on Monday, October 30th, at The Palace Saloon. Burial has taken place at Pine Grove Cemetery. WILLIAM SPARKS , age 68, of Bay City, formerly of Sault Ste. Marie, passed away at his home on Sunday, October 22, 2006 after a long battle with emphysema. He was born on January 7, 1938 in Sault Ste. Marie. Bill was a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. He loved to play the guitar and sing. He worked in Saginaw as a heavy equipment operator and later worked as a painter. Bill is survived by his daughters, Michelle Sparks of Bay City and Tina (Steve) Spessard of Gerber, Calif.; grandchildren, Samantha “Sammie” Sparks, Bridget Scripner, Melissa Bell, Jamie Bell and Cody Spessard; great-grandchildren, Shawn and Brynn Scripner; a brother, John (Isabelle) Sparks of Sault Ste. Marie; three sisters, Shirley (Jack) Brosco of Sault Ste. Marie, Lorraine (Richard) Brown of Dafter and Loretta (Robert) McCormick of Brimley; and his special extended family, Steve and Corinna Obermiller. Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Ann ‘Sue', his mother, Viola ‘May'; his father, Edward Sparks, Sr.; and two brothers, Edward Sparks, Jr. and Donald Sparks. Midland St., Bay City, MI FRANK STEELE - "Frank Steele died June 2, 1918 of a boiler explosion at Whitefish Point. He was 47 years 3 months of age, widowed, born in Wisconsin, and was a fireman. (Note of Mary E. Steele - his wife: Mary E. died June 22, 1913 of a chronic valvular disease of the heart at the hospital. She was 39 years 5 months 13 days of age, born in Ontario, as were her parents, George Watson and Agnes J. Welch. She was buried June 24th at Riverside (I assume the one in Sault Ste. Marie). Marie passed away early Thursday morning, May 29, 2008 at War Memorial Hospital. Marlene was born on November 28, 1938 in Sault Ste. Marie. She graduated from Sault High School with the class of 1956. On July 13, 1957, she married her high school sweetheart, Duane Swanson at St. Joseph Catholic Church. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last summer. Marlene worked as a bookkeeper for both the EUPTA and for Kinross Correctional Facility. She was also active with the War Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Gift Shop, where she served as treasurer for 10 years. She loved spending time with her friends and working on crafts at her monthly sewing club and tea club. Her only grandchild, Kristen was her pride and joy. She is survived by her husband: Duane Swanson, a daughter: Sheryl (Jim) King of Comstock Park, a daughter-in-law: Patti Swanson of Escanaba, and a granddaughter: Kristen King of Comstock Park. She is also survived by her two sisters: Josephine Joy of Milford, Conn. and Ruth (Bud) Cook of Kokomo, Ind. She was preceded in death by her parents: Carmine and Mary (Bonacci) Morelli, a beloved son: Steven Swanson, and a brother: Carmine Morelli, Jr. Visitation will be held from 6 until 9 p.m. on Friday, May 30, 2008 at C.S. Mulder Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 31, 2008 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Pawel Mecwel as Celebrant.
