Channing, Dickinson County: this village in Sagola Township began as a railroad junction called Ford Siding, with Michael Aylward as its first railroad agent; given a post office as Channing, for John Parke Channing, a mining engineer surveying the area; Horace W. WEASEL BITS A MAIL CLERK AT CHANNING CHANNING, Mich., Feb. 23--Sleeping in a mail car here, John McKelvie, a mail clerk on the C.M. & St. P. Railroad, was attacked last night by a weasel. The animal bit the man in the arm, and caused a severe wound. The weasel had been shipped by express and had escaped several days previously. It has not been recaptured. --Duluth News-Tribune, February 24, 1911 STATE POLICE SENT TO CHANNING, MICH. Lansing, Aug. 15--A small detachment of state police, from the police pose at Negaunee, was ordered to Channing by Governor Groesbeck, last night.
