VERNIER, Emaline (Hershberger)
for thirty years a resident of the community, passed away at the home of her son, Melvin Baker of Chippewa Lake, on Thursday of last week, and G. V. Wright was called to bring the remains to Alma for burial. Mrs. Vernier was eighty five years of age, but had been in excellent health until a few days before her death when a paralytic stroke prostrated her.
The body rested at Wright’s Funeral Home until Saturday afternoon when the funeral was held at the Christian Church on East Superior street. Rev. Joseph Sherick conducted the rites and burial was made at Riverside cemetery. Mrs. Bertha Henton accompanied by her niece, Miss Bethel Yutzy, sang “Asleep in Jesus” and “Safe in the Arms of Jesus,” appropriate numbers for the trusting soul just passed away. Many lovely flowers paid silent tribute to Mrs. Vernier and testified to the warm affection held for her among relatives and friends. The pall-bearers were three sons-in-law, George Dunlap, C. D. Edmunds and Hugh Ferguson, and three close friends, Daniel Zinn, Mr. Yutzy and Mr. Plott, the last two of Middleton.
Emaline Hershberger was the daughter of Samuel and Lydia Hershberger and born on August 26th, 1847 in Indiana. Later she moved with her parents to Stark County, Ohio. In 1865 she married Peter Baker, who died some years later. She married again in 1882, and Silas Andrews was the second husband. From girlhood she was a faithful member of the Church of the Brethren and maintained a quiet but unswerving faith until her death. She was an intelligent and interesting woman, and retained her interest in family and friends until her death, thus gaining the love and regard of all who knew her.
Many in the community will hear of Mrs. Vernier’s death with regret. She lived in Alma for some years until the death of her husband and then made her home with her children about the state. She is survived by five children: Melvin Baker of Chippewa Lake; Charles Andrews of Arcada Township, Mrs. Altha Dunlap of Dimondale; Mrs. C. D. Edmunds of Pine River, and Mrs. Hugh Fergason of Detroit. There are also ten grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren
