McLEOD, Malcolm J.
State labor commissioner; born, Huron Co., Can., Jan. 22, 1868; son of John and Flora (McKinnon) McLeod; came to Michigan with parents in infancy; educated in public schools of Attica, Mich., and Sarnia, Ont.,; married at Sarnia, May 19, 1890, Christina Darvux. Began active career as clerk in grocery store; was employed on construction of the St. Clair tunnel, 1888-1891; came to Detroit, 1891, and was street car conductor until 1895; acted as business agent for street car employees, 1895-1900; was appointed deputy labor commissioner by Gov. Bliss, 1901, and state labor commissioner by Gov. Warner, 1905. Republican. Roman Catholic. Was member state legislature, 1899-1900; candidate for nomination for mayor of Detroit and received 10,000 votes at primary election, but was defeated by Dr. J.H. Carstens.
