CHARLES P. RHOADES 95, of St. Ignace, was a World War II veteran who worked for the Michigan State Ferries and later owned a St. Ignace gift shop in town. Mr. Rhoades died Friday, June 2, 2006, at Mackinac Straits Hospital Long Term Care in St. Ignace, where he had lived for several years. He was born August 6, 1910, in St. Ignace to John Henry and Emmaline (nee Richardson) Rhoades. He was graduated from high school and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked for the Michigan State Ferries before the war and after his discharge. He and his wife owned Rhoades Economy Sales & Gifts Shop in St. Ignace for several years which later was the Secretary of State Offices. They also operated a Sears store in St. Ignace. He later became the Star Rural Route mail carrier for the U.S. Post Office, working there until retirement. He loved to operate heavy equipment with his son,Father C. Michael Rhoades, at their camp near Gulliver. He especially loved the bulldozer, moving the earth. He was a life member of St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church. His first wife Frieda, died October 23, 1970, and his second wife, Margaret McLeod Rhoades, died March 22, 2003. Farther Rhoades died Febuary 12,2006. He is survived by a daughter, Dr. Mary Margaret Rhoades of Madison, Wisconsin; nieces and nephews and their families, Mark Rhoades, Pam Langford, Mike McCann, Anna Kay McCanndeCandanosa of Montery, Mexico, the McGuire families, and the many members of the McLeod family in Hessel, Cedarville, and Canada. A memorial mass will be held Monday June 12, at 10a.m. at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church with Father Jim Williams and Father Norbert Landreville officiating. Burial will be in St. Ignatius Cemetery later in the summer. Dodson Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

A second Obit on June 15,2006. - Charles P. Rhoades, 95, of St. Ignace, died Friday June 2,2006, at Mackinac Straits Hospital Long Term Care in St. Ignace, where he lived for several years. In a full obituary for Mr. Rhoades printed in The St. Ignace News June 8, siblings preceding in death were not included. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Richardson Rhoades, who died while attending the University of Michigan in 1921, and Robert Michael Rhoades, an infant sister, Catherine, and sisters Helen Rhoades McCann and Georgia Margaret Rhoades. He was also preceded in death by wives Frieda Caroline Brondstetter Rhoades and Margaret Mary Mertaugh McLeod Rhoades, and a son, the Reverend C. Michael Rhoades. Mr. Rhoades is survived by his daughter, Dr. Mary Margaret Rhoades, a number of nieces and nephews, members of the McLeod and Porco families, and a special cousin, Mary Fenlon LaChapelle. Mr. Rhoades was the last surviving child of John Henry and Emmaline Richardson Rhoades. Mr. Rhoades will be remembered as a man who had a smile for everyone, family members said, and who was pleasant, gracious, and a true gentleman.

HARRY LAWRENCE RYE of Hessel grew up in Pickford and then served in the United States Army. He worked for General Motors at the Fisher Body factory in Flint for more then 30 years. While working at Fisher, he rode the Indianapolis 500 Pace Car through the Sault Ste. Marie bicentennial parade. Mr. Rye died at the age of 72 Sunday, January 8, 2006, at his home. He was born November 26, 1933, in Pickford to Lloyd Richard and Fanny Mildred Hill Rye. After he retired from General Motors, he returned to the Pickford and Hessel areas to make his home and enjoy his property on Rockview Hill, south of Pickford. For a few summers, he worked at Thick'n Thin Lumber in Cedarville. Mr. Rye was a life member of AmVets He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and spending time in the woods watching the animals. He also collected cast steel cars. Mr. Rye is survived by one sister and her family, Shirley andMarvin McDowell of Pickford; nieces and nephews and their families, Carol and Tim Storey, Bill and Dorothy McDowell, Charles McDowell, Myrna and Fred Laundy, Rick Rye, Ron and Colleen Rye, Tim and Diann Rye, David and Tammie Rye, Susan and John Ackley, Ddan and Tracy Rye, and Kaye and Rob Batho, and many grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Services were Thursday, January 12, at Reamer Galer Funeral Home with the Reverend Ron Brown officiating. Spring burial will be at Cottle Cemetery in Marquette Township, Pickford
