WILLIAM AXFORD
Was born at Windom, Ontario, Canada, March 28, 1813. He came with his parents to
Michigan in 1822, who settled in Macomb county, about three miles east of the
village of Rochester. As a young man, he was a teacher, and afterwards became a
merchant at Avon. In 1842 he removed to Clarkston, where he was a successful
merchant for twenty-five years. He was Representative in the Michigan House in
1850, and was a member of the Constitutional Convention of 1850. He was a
Democrat in politics, and eminently a leader. As a business man he contributed
largely to the prosperity of Clarkston. He died September 16, 1886.
