Jonathan Tice (1841-1921)
(Jonathan, Elizabeth, Jonathan, Thomas A.
Jonathan, Samuel, Isaac)
Jonathan was born November 19, 1841 in
Berford, Canada and died November 05, 1921
in Yale, Michigan. He married Mary Ann
Hollenbeck October 09, 1865 in Lexington,
Michigan, daughter of David Hollenbeck and
Mary Goheen. She was born November 16,
1848 in Port Hope, Ontario, Canada (Durham
East), Hamilton Twp, Ontario per Henry's birth
certificate, and died March 27, 1933 in Yale,
Michigan--Age 84
Born in Grimsby or Aukaster or Twp. of Sault
Fleet, Ontario, Canada, or Berford, Canada.
Moved to Michigan 1856, moved from
Brockway, Michigan to Big Rapids, Michigan
in 1872, to Lynn 1879 and back to Brockway in
1903. He enlisted March 29, 1864, Pontiac in
Co. M, 1st Mich. Light Artillery and was
discharged August 1, 1865.
Jonathan Tice was 24 when he married
MaryAnn Hollenbeck at Lexington,
Michigan...but MaryAnn was only 16 years
old. Jonathan Tice built his house five miles
west of Yale Road and raised his seven
children in it. It was VERY small (I've been in
it many times...but it is now gone.)
Downstairs, there was a kitchen about 6'x7', a
dining room maybe 10'x9', a living room
maybe 10'x10' and a bedroom maybe 8'x8' with
a tiny closet. Upstairs was an open room with a
stovepipe through it for heat.
According to Helen Tice Rapley, Jonathan was
held at Andersonville Prison, Georgia by the
Confederate States. But I can find no
verification of this. However, I did get this info
off from the internet: Jonathan Tice, D.O.B. 11-
19-1841, enlisted in Co. M 1st Michigan Light
Artillery on 03-29-1862 and served as a wagon
master delivering munitions and supplies.
During the war he was captured by Confederate
Troops and imprisoned at Andersonville.
Jonathan, along with several other Federal
soldiers, escaped from Andersonville. He was
wounded, recaptured, and then sent to Libby
Confederate Prison.
Jonathan moved to Michigan in 1856; living in
Speaker Township, Sanilac County in 1865;
moved from Brockway to Big Rapids in 1872,
to Lynn in 1879, and to Brockway in 1903

Obituary of Jonathan Tice (1841-1921)
(Jonathan, Elizabeth, Jonathan, Thomas A.
Jonathan, Samuel, Isaac)
Mr. Jonathan Tice was born in Berford,
Canada, Nov. 19, 1841, and departed this life
Nov. 5, being 79 years, 11 months and 16 days
of age.
Oct. 9, 1865, he was united in marriage with
Miss Mary Ann Hollenbeck, with whom he
lived in happy wedlock for 56 years. To this
union were born five sons and two daughters,
Solomon Tice, of Detroit; Mrs. John Morgan,
of Brockway township; Oliver Tice, Port
Huron; Jesse Tice, Lynn township; Mrs.
Bunyan Douglass, Brown City; Henry Tice,
Port Huron, and John Tice, Detroit.
He is also survived by a brother, Albert Tice,
of Mecosta Co., and two sisters, Mrs. Phebe
Condon, of Omaha, Neb., and Mrs. Mary
McCormick, of Mecosta Co., a number of
grandchildren and a host of friends who
graciously extend their sympathy at this time
to those who mourn.
Mr. Tice began work for himself as a young
man, and by hard work and economy has made
his way in the world. He lumbered, farmed and
served his country as a soldier in the Civil,
war,, when he enlisted in the First Michigan Light
Artillery and served for two years, or in
other words, until the close of the war, when
he was honorably discharged. During the last
two years he has lived a retired life in Yale, in
the midst of hi s f r i ends .
For a number of years he has entertained a
strong, desire to know his God in the
forgiveness of his sins, and it was his good
fortune during the last few months to have the
witness of his acceptance with God. Even
during his last illness he gladdened the hearts
of those who were near by saying, "I was a
great sinner, but Jesus saved me''. He often
expressed a desire to live nearer to Him. He
was a great sufferer and he has gone to his
reward.
Funeral services were held in the Brick
Chapel on Monday, Nov. 7 by Elds. R. M.
Dodd and J. A. Avery. Interment was made in
Elmwood cemetery.

pioneer resident of Brockway Township, at

for some time.
Mrs. Tice was born in Port Hope, Ont., but
spent most of her life in this vicinity. For
the past fourteen years she made her home in
Yale.

Mennonite church at 2:00 p. m. Wednesday,

daughters, Mrs. Ida Morgan, Brockway
township, and Mrs. Edith Douglas, Elkton, are
Saul Solomon Tice (1868-1948)
(Saul, Jonathan, Elizabeth, Jonathan, Thomas
A., Jonathan, Samuel, Isaac)
Saul was born June 12, 1868 in Mecosta,
Michigan, his Obit says "Yale", Michigan, and
died October 01, 1948 in Wayne, Michigan--
Age 80 (His Obit says Detroit). He married
Cora Bridget Ferguson July 03, 1893 in Lynn
Twp, Michigan daughter of William “Henry”
Ferguson and Julia Depeel.. She was born
March 04, 1873 in Brockway Twp, Yale,
Michigan, and died March 01, 1934 in Detroit,
MI - age Abt. 61.
J. Ferguson had 167 acres and Saul Tice had
78. Other landowners in section13 were W. A.
Campbell, Wayside Farm, Sam Bonney,
Andrew Curry, Mary Morgan, Stephen
McMurtrie, Pleasant Lane Farm-Robert
Middleton. Across from the Ferguson acreage
in section 12 was A.E. Ostrander. Across from
the Tice land in section 12 were Ed. Ohmer and
W. Beers.
Saul, my grandfather married the girl next door,
literally. Cora B. Ferguson was the daughter of
William "Henry" Ferguson and Julia DePeel.
They lived in the next house to the west of the
Tice Family. Henry was killed by a falling
tree, while logging in 1888, leaving Julia with
five children ages 8 through 16. Julia's
parentage is uncertain as her gt. gt. grandfather
"Unknown" was killed about 1759 in the war in
Canada fighting for the French. Upon learning
of the death of her husband, his wife promptly
died leaving a newborn infant, who was then
adopted by another French officer by the name
of DePeel. So, our lineage became DePeel
with no way of knowing who the actual father
was who died. Saul and Cora moved into the
house that Jonathan had built and raised six
children there. Their oldest of seven
children died at the age of two. Their oldest
three children graduated from Yale High
School. They moved to Detroit where Saul
could work in the auto factories for 50 cents a
day. Their next two sons and their daughter
Helen graduated from Eastern High School in
Detroit.
Saul and Cora moved back to the farm as
Cora's health deteriorated and Helen moved in
with her brother Hilton and his wife Aileen in
Detroit, so she could finish her senior year in
high school and graduate. She then moved
back to the farm and cared for her father who
was now 65 years old...at that time in 1933, that
was old. They stayed on at the farm, where
Helen met Hilton Rapley who had been born,
and grew up, on a farm near the Tices. When
first married, Hilton and Helen lived with Saul.
In 1945, Hilton had the opportunity to buy a
farm that he had always admired. When they
purchased this farm, Saul moved with them and
sold his farm to his son Donald. Saul lived
with Hilton and Helen until his death in 1948.
He had dementia, and would run away,...”going
back to the North Woods.”
