City of Holly

Nathan Herrick settled here in 1830. Ira C. Alger built a sawmill and grist mill in 1843, he also became the first station agent of Algerville when the Detroit & Milwaukee Railroad came through in 1855.

Originally established as Holly Mills on July 3, 1851 with Marcus L. Young as its first postmaster. Land was first platted by James G. Mitchell in 1855.

It was named after Mount Holly, NJ, by Jonathan T. Allen one of the early settlers who had come from that eastern community in 1835.

The name was shortned to Holly due to the abundance of the beautiful holly which grew and still grows in the area) on December 7, 1861 with William R. Kendall as postmaster.

Holly was incorporated as a village in 1865.

The Holly, MI Post Office is located in Oakland County, and years ago used an unusual and unique postmark.

No longer an Inn, Michigan's Holly Hotel is a nationally-known American restaurant, listed on the United States Register of Historic Places on February 8, 1980. The essence of award-winning regional and classical cuisine, late Queen Anne Victorian architecture, and a loyal following since 1891.
