RATHBONE, Charles A.
Treasurer and general manager Buhl Malleable Co.; born, LeRoy, N.Y., Aug. 4, 1854; son of William Palmer (the leading real estate operator in his day, who was instrumental in the laying out of subdivisions and upbuilding of Detroit, and grandson of General I. Rathbone of LeRoy, N.Y.) and H. Maria (Crane) Rathbone; educated at LeRoy Academy; unmarried. Came to Detroit, in 1854. Started career with Buhl, DuCharme & Co. (now Buhl Sons Co.) and represented them on the road for several years; manager Cass Farm Co., 1893-1901, during which time he subdivided the farm and transplanted the first large trees, one thousand in number, and turned that section into a park; has been treasurer and general manager Buhl Malleable Co., manufacturer of malleable castings, since 1901. Also director Waterman Marine Motor Co., C.B. Dickerson. Largely interested in the upbuilding of the western part of the city. Chairman house committee Detroit Board of Commerce; member legal committee Employers’ Association. Served in U.S. Navy during Spanish-American War on board U.S.S. REILLY, John Cornelius
lawyer; born in Walworth Co., Wis., May 26, 1848; son of John and Mary (Short) Reilly; educated in public schools of Racine, Wis.; married, Nov. 18,1879, Ida Buhl (who died, September, 1881); again, Detroit, November, 1886, Miss Nettie Lansing. Studied law and was admitted to the bar before the Supreme Court, in Detroit, 1870, after studying for three years in the office of Moore & Griffin; began practice in Detroit, 1870; elected circuit judge, Third Judicial District, April, 1875, begin the youngest man ever elected in Michigan to this office, and in November following, was appointed by Gov. John J. Bagley to fill the unexpired term of Judge Patchen; resigned from bench, 1881, to resume practice of law, but in meantime the bench had been increased from one to three judges and was nominated and elected to one of the positions, but through a mistake in returns was not seated; contest carried to State Legislature, but hearing denied; at next election was returned to bench by 10,000 majority and continued to serve until Jan. 1, 1903; has devoted his attention since 1903 to law and to building electric railways. President of the Rapid Ry. to Mt. Clemens, from time it was opened to traffic, 1894, until the line was sold to the Detroit United Ry., 1901, the line having previously extended to port Huron, as the Detroit, port Huron & Shore Line Ry. Organized a construction company (of which was president), with E.M. Fowler, Matthew Slush, Charles R Hannan and A.H. Fleming, and completed construction to Detroit of the Monroe & Toledo Ry., which was reorganized as the Detroit, Monroe & Toledo Short Line Ry.; negotiated sale of the property to Jere C. Hutchins and Mar. 1, 1906, the stock was transferred to interests represented by the Detroit United Ry. Now engaged in building the Chicago, Southern Tractions Ry. from Chicago to Kankakee, Ill., about fifty miles, his work in this and other railway enterprises being of a financial and legal character. President and treasurer Detroit and Toledo Construction Co.; director and treasurer Chicago and Southern Traction Co.; director First National Bank, Security Trust Co. RICH, Edward A.
is one of the younger members of the Detroit bar and is steadily forging to the front in his profession as a result of his energy, ability and close application. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, March 9, 1890, a son of James and Rose (Lefton) Rich, and in the public schools of his nativeity he acquired his early education, after which he entered the Detroit College of Law, which conferred upon him the degree of L.L. B. On the 18th of June, 1915, be was admitted to the Michigan bar and he has since practiced his profession in Detroit, maintaining a soite of offices in the Penobscot building. To hla chosen life work he gives his undivided attention and has won a liberal clientale for one of his years. With a nature that cannot be oontent with mediocrity, he haa closely applied himself to the mastery of legal principles and bis clear and cogent reasoning and carefnl presentation of his eases indicate his careful and thorough preparation.
At Frankfort, Michigan, on the 10th of July, 1914, Mr. Rich was united in marriage to Miss Helen Lee, a daughter of Joseph and Alice Lee, prominent residents of that place. To this union has been born a daughter, Alice Rosalie, whose birth occurred on the 14th of January, 1917. Mr. Rich is deeply interested in all that pertains to the welfare and progress of his city and is a valued member of the Detroit Board of Commerce, while his professional connections are with the Commercial Law League of America and the Lawyers Club. His time and attention are concentrated upon his law practice and in a profession demanding keen intellectuality and individual merit he is making continuous progress.

Railway official; born, Rochester, N.Y., Feb. 24, 1863; son of M. D. and Emaline (Mitchell) Rowley; educated in public schools; married at Quincy, Ill., 1886, Carrie Boswell. Began active career as messenger in office of Blue Line, 1877; agent same line, at Quincy, Ill., 1882, continuing until 1885; was state agent Blue Line and Canada Southern Line, at Detroit, 1885-95; commercial agent Michigan Central R.R., at Detroit, 1895-97; assistant general freight agent, Bay City, 1899-1902, and general freight agent same road, since Jan. 1, 1903. RUMNEY, John G.
Born, Detroit, Oct. 13, 1850; son of John and Martha (Palmer) Ramney; educated in Detroit high School; married, Detroit, Jan. 30, 1883, Mary E. Pittman. Filled position of commercial traveler for wholesale hardware firm previous to 1880; was treasurer Henry C. Hart Manufacturing Co. for eight years and engaged in real estate and cattle business in Montana until 1896; returned to Michigan and assumed management of plant of the American Radiator Co. and Kalamazoo Spring and Axle Co., Kalamazoo; assisted in organizing the Detroit Steel Products Co., 1904, and has been its treasurer and manager from time of organization. Baldwin (now deceased); 2d, St. Louis, Mar. 16, 1907, Miss Emma A. Matt. Began active career in produce commission business at Port Huron, where he and his brother, Alfred H., established in business, as Rush Bros., 1878; father admitted to firm later, which has since been Alfred Rush & Sons (Alfred and Alfred H. Rush residents of California since 1905), Edward F. in control of the business, assisted by his son, Cecil F., who is a member of the firm. Also president Port Huron Amusement Co. Assistant general manager Russel Wheel & Foundry Co.; born, Springfield, O., Nov. 19, 1864; son of Francis G. and Helen (Edwards) Russel; educated in public schools, married at Richmond, Va., Apr. 19,1892, Anna m. Rose. Began active career in employ of the Richmond Locomotive and Machine Works, continuing until 1895; was connected with C.W. Hunt Co., New York City, manufacturers of coal handling and conveying machinery, 1895-97; came to Detroit, 1897, as superintendent of Russel Wheel & Foundry Co., manufacturers of structural steel cars, and in general foundry and machinery business, and continued in that position until 1903, since which time he has been assistant general manager and director of the company. RYAN, Frank C.
President, Parke, Davis & co.; born, Marcellus Falls, N.Y., 1861; educated in public schools of Elmira, N.Y.; spent three years in pharmacy of Brown & Dawson, Syracuse, N.Y.; graduate Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, 1884. Began active career in Philadelphia, where he was identified with several stores; was assistant professor of pharmacy and in charge of commercial department, Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, also lecturer on pharmacy at Woman’s Medical College, Philadelphia; resigned various positions and came to Detroit as chief pharmacist Parke, Davis & Co., 1900; was elected member of directors, 1903, secretary, 1905, vice president, 1906, and president of the company after decease of Theodore D. Buhl, 1907. Made trip of seven months around the world visiting foreign branches of the company, returning early in 1907. Member Detroit Board of Commerce. Began active career by organizing and promoting the Detroit Auto-Marine Co., 1905, later merged with the Huffman Hinge and Foundry Co., of Cleveland, forming the Ferro Machine and Foundry Co., Cleveland; organized and promoted the St. Clair Motor Co. and managed same, 1906; now president Belle Isle Motor Co. (incorporated), manufacturers of high grade marine engines, and the Detroit Gear Co., manufacturers of the Marine Reverse Gear. Republican as to politics; Congregationalist in church affiliation.
