YATES., Henry Wellington, physician and surgeon; born, Oxford Tp., Ont., Can., Feb. 24, 1867; son of Albert and Margaret (Eastman) Yates; came to Michigan with parents, 1874; educated in public schools of Washington, Mich.; Romeo (Mich.) High School, graduating, June, 1886; Detroit College of Medicine, 1891i-94, degree of M. D., 1894; house surgeon St. Mary's Hospital, Detroit, 1894-95; married at Detroit, Aug. 4, 1898, Margaret M. Vibbert. YEOMANS, Arthur - born, Camden, Can., Aug. 11, 1843; son of Andrew and Jane (Milligan) Yeomans; educated in public schools of New York state; married at Detroit, 1866, Annie Kew. Became resident of New York state, 1854; enlisted as private in Co. F, 81st New York Volunteer Infantry, 1861, and discharged as sergeant in 1865, Army of the Potomac and Army of the James; returned to New York after being discharged from military service and in spring of 1866 located in Detroit; was connected with the Detroit Chair Factory, 1866-76, and then was a member of the police force for one year. Began the manufacture of boxes, 1898, as Baxter & Yeomans, the title becoming Detroit Box Co., and later Yeomans, Cheseborough & Co., which continued for ten years; then Yeomans Lumber and Box Co. until January, 1906, since which time the title has been the Acme Box Co. YERKER, George B. - Lawyer; born, Novi, Mich., Nov. 16, 1864 son of Robert and Sarah (Holmes) Yerkes; educated at State Normal School, Ypsilanti, Mich., and Law Department, University of Michigan graduating, degree of LL. B., 1888; married at Detroit, June 16, 1891, Jennie Butterfield. Has been resident of Detroit since 1888; member law firm of Haug & Yerkes, 1890-1907. YORK, Francis L. - Musical director, born at Ontonagon, Mich., Mar. 9, 1861; son of Rev. L.C. and Frances DeGrace (Collester) York; graduate Ann Arbor (Mich.) High School, 1878, University of Michigan, B.A., 1883 (only graduate ever unanimously recommended by faculty for M.A. degree, summa cum laude; studied organ and composition with Alexander Guilmant, Paris, 1892, 1898; married at Brighton, Mich (Livingston Co.) ., Sept. 9, 1883, Mary O. Albright. Teacher piano, organ and composition University School of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Mich., 1892-06; head of piano department, State Normal Conservatory , Ypsilanti, Mich., 1896-1908; director Detroit Conservatory of Music since 1902, and president of corporation; organist and director Central M. E. Church, Detroit, since 1902. Represented Michigan as concert organist, Pan-American Exposition, Buffalo, 1901; alternated with Alexander Guilmant of Paris in organ concerts, St. Louis Exposition, 1904; gave numerous concerts, recitals, etc. In 1905 furnished report to French Government on music study in America, with special reference to conservatory work.
