JOSEPH BELANGER
Insurance and real estate, consul of France; born, Province of Quebec, Can., Oct. 8, 1848; son of Francois Stanislas Alfred and Marie Louise (Doyon) Belanger; educated at College of St. Marie, Beauce; graduate of first class from military institute at Quebec, 1865; married at Detroit, Feb. 16, 1873, Madeleine Askin Peltier. Studied law before coming to Detroit, Feb. 1, 1868, and continued to study for a year afterwards; entered insurance office, 1869, and began business for himself, 1871, admitting his son to partnership, 1903. Member Detroit Board of Commerce, Detroit Fire Underwriter's Association. Appointed consul of France, Mar. 27, 1889; appointed by French government to represent France at Bi-centennial of foundation of Detroit by Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, 1701; received decoration of the Palmes Academiques for service performed. President d'Honneur of L'Alliance Francaise, comite de Detroit, since its foundation, 1902; honorary member Detroit Light Infantry since 1887; member Wayne County Historical and Pioneer Society since 1893.
