GEORGE HENDRIE

Real estate, banking, etc.; born Glasgow, Scotland, Feb. 9, 1834, son of John and Elizabeth (Strathearn) Hendrie; educated in Glasgow High School; came to America, 1858, married, Detroit, Oct. 31, 1865, Sarah Sibley Trowbridge. Began career in cartage business, at Hamilton, Ont., 1858; came to Detroit and established himself in same line of business, April, 1859; secured seven years' lease on lines of the old Detroit Street Ry. Co., he and his associates becoming owners of the lines by purchase, 1876; added Grand River Street Ry. lines to the system, 1890; and sold out to Citizens' Ry. Co., 1891. Was chief organizer and owner of the Hamtrack & Grosse Pointe Ry., 1888, of the Wyandotte & Detroit River Ry. Co., 1892, and of the Detroit River Ry., and of the Detroit & Pontiac Ry. Co., 1895. Organized, with associates, 1878, what is now the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic R.R., and became interested in numerous ventures tending to the development of the Upper Peninsula. Was instrumental in securing appropriation of money for the purchase of Belle Isle as a public park. President Detroit & Buffalo Steamboar Co., Detroit Omnibus Line Co., Michigan Avenue Land Co.,(formerly Eureka Iron and Steel Co.); vice president Commercial National Bank, Wyandotte Savings Bank, Union Trust Co., Detroit & Cleveland Navigation Co. Member Christ Church. Mason, Knight Templar. Clubs: Detroit, Fellowcraft, Yondotega, Detroit Country, Detroit Driving. Recreation: On farm at Royal Oak, Mich. Office: 215 Hammond Bldg., Detroit. Born, Detroit, Oct. 12, 1866; son of George and Sarah Sibley (Trowbridge) Hendrie; educated in public schools of Detroit and Trinity College, Hartford, Conn., graduation, degree of B.A., 1887; married at Detroit, Nov. 1894, Catherine Marie Moran. Was treasurer and director Detroit City Railway, 1889-91; manager and treasurer various suburban electric railways, including Wyandotte & Detroit River and Detroit & Pontiac Ry., 1890-1902. General manager and treasurer Grand Rapids, Holland & Chicago Railway; treasurer Detroit River Land Co.,; director Detroit Savings Bank, Detroit & Buffalo Steamboat Co., Detroit Omnibus Line Co., Grosse Pointe Land Co. Member Michigan State Naval Brigade, 1894-03, commanding same 11901-03; ensign U.S. Navy during Spanish-American War, 1898. Clubs: Yondotega, Detroit, Detroit Boat, Detroit Racquet and Curling, University, Detroit Automobile, Country. Recreations: Outdoor pastimes. Office: 218 Hammond Bldg., Detroit. Real estate: born Detroit, Nov. 11, 1875; son of George and Sarah Sibley (Trowbridge) Hendrie; educated in public and high schools of Detroit; St. Paul's School, Concord, N.H.; Trinity College, Hartford, Conn.; married at Detroit, 1906, Kathleen Washburne McGraw. Has been associated with his father in business in Detroit since 1896; secretary and treasurer Grosse Pointe Lands Co., Jefferson Avenue Co., director Wyandotte Savings Bank, Fairview Improvement Association. Member Michigan Naval Brigade since 1896, lieutenant, junior grade; on board U.S.S. Yosemite, 1898, during Spanish-American War. Episcopalian. Member Delta Psi. Clubs: University, Country, Detroit, St. Andrew's Society. Recreation: Naval Militia. Office: 215 Hammond Buldg., Detroit. Residence: Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.
