CAMERON BEACH WATERMAN


- Lawyer, manufacturer; born, Detroit, Dec. 20, 1878; son of Cameron D. and Elizabeth H. (Beach) Waterman; educated in Detroit public and high schools, Detroit School for Boys; Yale University, graduating, B. A., 1901; LL. B., Yale Law School, 1904; married, Pittsburg, Pa., 1904, Miss Lois F. Miller. Admitted to the bar, New Haven, Conn., June, 1904; returned to Detroit, began practice and has devoted his attention mostly to patent cases. Invented the Waterman outboard motor and organized the Waterman Marine Motor CO., 1906, manufacturers of marine and stationary engines, of which is president. Republican. Presbyterian. Member D. K. E. junior fraternity, and senior society Wolf's Head. Clubs: Detroit Country, Detroit Motor Boat; Yale (New York). Recreations: Motoring, boating, baseball, tennis and fishing. Invention of the Outboard Motor
Cameron Waterman successfully tested his invention on the ice-filled Detroit River in February, 1905. He formed the Waterman Marine Motor Company and filed a patent application on December 6, 1905 for a Boat-Propelling Device. U.S. Patent No. 851,389 issued April 23, 1907.
