DOROTHY ANN HALMHUBER , 81, of Novi, MI, passed away on Friday April 30, 2010. She was born Dorothy Gordon on August 17, 1928 in Covington, KY, the only child to the late Thomas and Doriena Gordon, before her family moved to Detroit. She graduated from Cooley High School and spent 2 years at Albion College where she was an active member of the Delta Zeta Sorority. The friends she made there would be lifelong. She was very athletic in her youth and enjoyed playing basketball. At the age of 23 she was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, and would battle it until her death at 81, far longer than most doctors could believe. It was in a youth group through church at the age of 13 that she would meet her future husband, Roy Halmhuber. The two would be married on June 11, 1948 at the Westlawn Church in Detroit, MI. They would later become involved with the Strathmore Church in Detroit, before settling in at the First United Methodist Church of Birmingham where they have remained active members since 1963. Dorothy always said her main role was to be a great mother to her kids. That is exactly what she did. Although she helped her husband’s business as a manufacturer’s rep., being his personal secretary, and later when her son took over, she helped him as an office manager; her family was always her main focus. It was also important for her to pass on to her girls how to cook and sew. She truly enjoyed spending time at their cottage up north at Big Glen Lake. They spent many long weekends there as a family, many Christmas holidays, and she would always decorate the tree with handmade ornaments that she and the kids would make. One of the greatest gifts that she passed on to her kids was a family cookbook. The time she took to get this started and to keep it up will be a gift passed on for generations to come. It is now in its fifth edition. She loved hummingbirds, and also liked to travel, play golf, and get together with good friends. Playing bridge, card games, jigsaw puzzles and crosswords were other things Dorothy did in her free time. Dorothy was involved in a neighborhood garden club, and also was a member of P.E.O. for Women and passed that on to her girls as well. Although she struggled with arthritis most of her life, she never complained and was an inspiration to all. She will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to have known her. She is survived by her beloved husband, Roy, of 61 years, and four children: Nancy Navarre (the late Gary), Susan Chrostek (David), Janet Mistele (Bill) and Gordy (Sarah). She was a devoted grandmother of seven: Karin Sowers (Lt. David), Rev. Scott Chrostek (Rev. Wendy), Bob Mistele, Jill Bayless (Eli), Cathy Matthews (Matt), Jimmy and Katie Halmhuber; and great-grandmother of Kaci and Charlie Sowers and one on the way. Family will receive friends at A.J. Desmond & Sons (Vasu, Rodgers & Connell Chapel), 32515 Woodward (btwn 13-14 Mile), Monday 2-4 & 6-8p.m. Funeral service Tuesday 11a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 1589 W. Maple Rd., Birmingham. Visitation begins at church 10:30a.m. Memorial tributes to the church or the Arthritis Foundation, 1050 Wilshire Dr., Suite 302, Troy, MI 48084.
