Marie Archibald

Miss Marie Archibald, age 24, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Archibald of Bay Lake, died Friday morning of the disease [influenza] and the funeral was held in the afternoon. She was a graduate of the Brainerd high school and a teacher of rural schools. A brother, Earl Archibald, is sick and not expected to live.


Nancy J. Basford

CROSBY – Mrs. Nancy J. Basford, 63, wife of Orville H. Basford, died Sunday afternoon at the home of her son, Samuel, of rheumatism. Besides her husband, five children survive: Mrs. Frank Scott, Duluth; Mrs. F. H. Wellen, Fort Dodge, Iowa; Mrs. Amos Morton and John Basford, Brainerd, and Samuel Basford, Crosby.


George Erwin

Brainerd – While playing with his little granddaughter at the home of Mrs. Nellie Anthony of Oak Lawn township, George Erwin, age 61, was stricken with heart disease. He attempted to rise and fell against a stove and died half an hour later. He had worked hard all day hauling baled hay to Brainerd, then ate a hearty supper.

A gathering of family and friends with a prayer service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 8, at Overton Funeral Home, in Indianola. Burial will follow in the New Virginia Cemetery.
Roy Gerald Goering, age 80, of Brainerd, MN, formerly of Truro, IA, died Sunday, September 5, 2004, at the Cuyuna Regional Care Center in Crosby, MN. He was born on June 28, 1924, in Marion Co., IA to George and Gladys (Lovell) Goering. Surviving are his wife, Neola; 4 sons and daughters-in-law Gerald and Mary Ann Goering of Brainerd, Ron and Barb Goering of St. Charles, IA, Dan and Diane Goering of Truro, IA, and Charles and Jackie Goedken Goering of Brainerd; 1 daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Kenneth Armour of Des Moines, IA; 4 brothers and sisters-in-law, Ivan and Louise Goering of Chariton, IA, Kenneth and Sandy Goering of Newton, IA, Donnie Goering of Blue Grass, IA, and Franklin Dee and Alice Goering of Leon, IA; 2 sisters and brother-in-law, Frances Krutsinger of Chariton, IA, Katherine and Bill Kimzey of New Virginia, IA; 29 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren.

Barbara Goette services Monday
EMILY -- Mrs. Barbara E. Goette, 87, died at the Cuyuna Range District Nursing Home Friday. Born in Ardoch, ND, February 6, 1895, she had been an area resident since 1923. She was preceded in death by her husband and two sons. Survivors include three sons, Clarence of Finland, Minn./ Paul of Baldwin Park, Calif.; and James of Outing; three daughters, Mrs. Gordon (Caroline) Starry of Little Pine Route, Aitkin; Mrs. Lillian Goette of Brainerd; and Mrs. Ole (Dorothy) Rono of Route 3, Crosby; one sister, Mrs. Mae Holmes of Langdon, ND; 20 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 1:30 PM Monday at the Emily Wesleyan Church, with Rev. James Slye and Rev. Darrell Pedersen officiating. Burial will be in Pine Ridge Cemetery. Friends may call at the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby after 4 PM today and at the church one hour prior to services.

BRAINERD, Jan. 23. – John Leck, an employe at Eames Bros.’ market, died of pneumonia caused by a severe attack of la grippe. The remains will be sent to Jacksonville, Ills., for internment.


Bess Muirine

BRAINERD – Miss Bess Muirine, for many years a teacher in the local schools, died Sunday at the home of her sister, Mrs. J. B. McLane, St. Paul. The funeral will be held here Wednesday morning at the residence of Judge and Mrs. W. H. Fleming.


Frank Ness

The body of Frank Ness, 1931 West First street, who died Friday at the Brainerd hospital of Brights disease, was brought to Duluth yesterday and is at Forward’s undertaking rooms. Mr. Ness has been a resident of the West End for about 25 years. He is survived by his wife and four children. The funeral arrangements have not been made.

DEERWOOD – George Pine, a Chippewa Indian, committed suicide. His mother, widow and two children survive.


David W. Smiley

Brainerd – David W. Smiley, age 75, died of complications at his home in Northeast Brainerd. He served in the Civil war, having enlisted with an Indiana regiment.


William Toohey

Death in Brainerd
William Toohey, who died of influenza at Seattle, Wash., was buried in Brainerd Tuesday, Rev. Father J. J. O’Mahoney officiating. He had recently taken a position as traffic manager of the Bon Marche store.

Mrs. Margaret Torba, wife of Joseph P. Torba, of 424 Third avenue Northeast, died of influenza at the age of 33. She leaves a husband and the baby, just four days old.
