Rock County Herald
March 12, 1897

Battle Plain Correspondence of March 9.

Mrs. H. Vandemeer died from pneumonia last Friday and was buried yesterday.  Henry is down with the same disease and not expected to live.  By death Mrs. Vandemeer leaves 9 children between the ages of 1/2 yr and 15 yrs motherless.

Contributors Notes:

The last name is shown as VandeMeer, should be Vander Meer.
Elizabeth Vander Meer, was born Elizabeth Dijkstra, her marriage to Hendrik Vander Meer is her second marriage, she had one child with her first husband that was born right after her first husbands death, then she married Hendrik.

According to a calendar she would have died on March 5, Friday, Buried maybe on Tuesday the 9th, or the 8th, Monday, and the article is in the 12th newspaper.
One lady I contacted who is a family distant relative says she heard that both Elizabeth & Henry drank bad water from their well, or storage tank.  This says pneumonia.

Herman Van Essen

All relatives, friends and acquaintances, we hereby report that it has pleased God to take our dear father
Hermannus van Essen from us. He was born in Holthuserheide, in the district of Weener, Ostfriesland
and died on the 1st of December 1902 at the age of 51 years, 7 months and 4 days. His wife, our mother,
preceded him already for several years when the 4 children were still small into eternity. 4 daughter in
the ages of 9 to 17 years survive him.
The sorrowing children.
