Mary Athan
Mrs. O. W. Athan, for ten years head of the normal department of the Luverne
schools, died Saturday morning at Berkely, California. Mrs. Athan had left
Pipestone for Berkely on June 7th in response to word of the critical illness of
a sister residing at that place and the first intimation that she was not well
was received Friday morning by Mr. Athan, at Pipestone, in a message stating
that his wife was seriously ill with a kidney trouble and that it would be
necessary for her to undergo an operation at once. Mr. Athan, accompanied by his
daughter, Miss Esther, left that day for the West, but did not arrive at their
destination until Monday.
After Mrs. Athan had been called to Berkely, Mr. Athan began making arrangements
to join her there for a vacation period; had been granted a leave of absence
from his duties as a mail carrier, and planned to leave for California June
19th.
Mrs. Athan was 59 years of age and had been a resident of Pipestone for many
years, including the last ten years-the period that she had been in charge of
the Normal department of the Luverne schools. She had been re-elected to the
position for the coming year, and before being called to California had been
centering her attention on arrangements for the erection of a group tourist
cabin out on the Athan property in the south part of Pipestone.
She was a woman of splendid mentality and exceptional energy, and had made an
enviable reputation in her educational work here. It was characteristic of her
that she took a deep, kindly interest in the progress of each of her students
from year to year, and she was highly instrumental in their success, after they
completed their studies in her department, as well as before achieving that
goal.
She was a member of Luverne Chapter No. 47, of the Eastern Star, and the Luverne
Tourist Club and filled a prominent role in both organizations, News of Mrs
Athan's death came as a great shock to her Rock county acquaintances, for, as
far as known, she was not troubled with any physical ailment of a serious
nature.
Mrs Athan is survived by her husband and two daughters, Mrs. Edith Talmadge of
Chicago, and Miss Esther Athan, who is a professional nurse at Virginia.
It was expected that the body would arrive at Pipestone last evening and funeral
services will be held there this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, under the auspices
of the Luverne Chapter of the Eastern Star. A large delegation from the Luverne
Chapter will go to Pipestone to attend the funeral.
