My name is Lisa
Goss-Owens and I am your host for Attala
County. My family roots in Attala go back 5
generations. There is so much history in our county and
it is my goal to help ensure that as much of that
historical data is made available to everyone.
Please send any
contributions to Lisa
Our goal is to help you track your ancestors
through time by transcribing genealogical and historical
data for the free use of all researchers.
We're
looking for folks who share our dedication to putting
data online and are interested in helping this project
be as successful as it can be. If you are interested in
joining Genealogy Trails, view our Volunteer
Page for further information and then contact
Kim. (Enough
knowledge to make a basic web page and a desire to
transcribe data is required)

We regret that we are unable to
perform personal research for folks. All data we come across will be added
to this site. We thank you for visiting and hope you'll
come back again to view the updates we make to this
site.

If you would like to be kept
informed of our state and county website updates,
subscribe to any or all of our mailing
lists Mississippi is covered under our
"Southern States" mailing list.
Attala County was established on the 23rd of
December, 1833, and was one of the sixteen counties
carved from the Choctaw cession of 1830. The name is
derived from the heroine (Atala) of an Indian romance
written by Chateaubriand and chosen by the county's first state
senator, Gordon D.

In Attala County, in the 1800's, farming was
the primary occupation of many residents; the crops that
resulted, timber, cotton, and corn, required harvesting
that involved machinery. And the occupation of some of
these early Attala County residents was "gin
operator."
Attala County is
located in the geographic center of Mississippi and is
located along the scenic Natchez Trace Parkway.
Kosciusko is the county seat of Attala
County.
