Basic Community

About four miles north of Enterprise, in the north west of Clarke County, Mississippi, is the community of Basic.

Richard Olliphant, an operator of a saw mill, contacted a geologist, Dr. Cox, because he thought he had stumbled upon a large amount of good quality basic iron.  Believing they were about to experience an economic boom, the residents of the area decided in the name Basic City.

As time ventured on, and the iron did not pan out as expected, nor did Mr. Olliphant’s adventure in the brick business with the Mobile and Ohio Railroad coming to town, “City” was dropped from it’s name.
