The Evans family is of Scotch and Irish descent.  Jehu Evans, the father of John H. Evans, was born in Chesterville district, S. C., Oct. 8, 1795.  Sarah Pegues Hicks, the mother of the subject of this sketch, was a daughter of George Hicks, of Richmond county, N. C.  Her family is in Clarke County during a period of more than seventy years.  He was born Nov. 15, 1824 and died at DeSoto, Clarke county, Miss., Oct. 7, 1902 – Editor.
