Carmichael Community
Ten miles southeast of Quitman, Mississippi is the Carmichael Community named after a prominent citizen of the area, Monroe Carmichael. According to other sources it was originally named Maxville, and later renamed after the pioneering Carmichael family.
Monroe Carmichael was the postmaster, with the Post Office establishing in 1887.
In 1916 a small school began and grew to include four teachers and by 1958 had seventeen faculty members with an auditorium, study hall, and twelve class rooms.
Superintendents and principals that served until 1958 when the school closed were; T. D. Guinn, L. G. Hord, J. W. Lesley, J. H. Martin, S. D. McGrew, J. H. Nutt, O. H. Rutledge, W. A. Smith, and W. A. Welch. The school was considered one of the best in the county.
