Local Hunters Bag Deer Save Shirt Tails

(page 1)

A group of local hunters made a safari into the wilds of the new Flintkote hunting reserve north of Meridian and while they did not exactly cover themselves with glory one of them, Mr. George Kennedy, shot a 7-point buck and none of the mighty nimrods lost their shirt tails.  In Mississippi deer hunting protocol if you fire a shot at a deer and miss your shirt tail is ceremoniously cut off and you feel like a bull fighter who loses his cape or his sword – redfaced, that is.

In the deer hunting party that left here in the wee small hours of Thanksgiving morning were Messrs. George Kennedy, Frank Grimes, W. D. Richardson, Nathan Blackwell, Willie Morgan, and “Peanut” Sanders, who is 13-years old.  It was his first “big game” hunt and he didn’t care how cold it was or how long he had to stand in his station.  And when it came to eating then venison, which was divided up among the hunters “Peanut” thought it was the best meat he had ever eaten.

Says Train Didn't Stop For Cows

(page 4)

B. P. Kersh, of West Enterprise, who lost eight cows when a GM&O train ran into part of the herd of 48 cows, which were crossing the tracks some two weeks ago, says that the train didn’t stop or even slow down as was reported in this paper last week.

Mr. Kersh said that 48 cows got out of his pasture on the Kramer place and that he and four men were driving them in when the accident occurred.  As the cows were crossing the tracks Mr. Kersh heard the train and saw it approaching from the direction of Stonewall.  He ran down the track about a quarter of a mile toward Stonewall; waving his flashlight to attract the attention of the engineer.  He himself stood between the tracks, he said, signaling the engineer until the train was almost on top of him. But the train didn’t stop nor slow down.  Eight of the 48 cows in the herd were killed.
