BAILEY, Joseph W., representative,
was born in Copiah county, Miss., Oct. 6, 1863. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1883 and in 1884 served
as district elector from Mississippi. In 1885 he removed to Texas and settled at Gainesville in the practice of
law. In 1888 he was an elector from Texas on the Cleveland and Thurman ticket. He was a representative from the
5th Texas district in the 52d, 53d, 54th, 55th and 56th congresses, 1891-1900; took a seat in the U.S. senate Feb.
7, 1900, and was elected for the full term, 1901-'07.
