ADELMAN, Benjamin Taft
November 4, 1908 -- April 13, 2005
HATTIESBURG, MS --Benjamin Taft Adelman, formerly of Norwich, passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at the Windham House in Hattiesburg, MS, where he had resided for the last several years. Born on November 4, 1908, the son of Samuel and Bea Adelman, he grew up and was educated in the Boston, MA area. He was united in marriage for 49 years to Sally (Schwartz) Adelman, who preceded him in death in 1985. He is survived by son Michael Adelman and wife Amy of Hattiesburg, MS, son David Adelman and his wife Faith of Norwich, two grandsons, a greatgrandson, a greatgranddaughter, and several nieces. He was predeceased by his sister, Grace (Adelman) Stone. In his early years, he worked for B&A Motors in Newton, MA and for Schwartz Brothers in Norwich, CT. In 1948 he established B&A Advertising Co. in Norwich, CT., which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1988. For many years he was an active member of the Beth Jacob Synagogue in Norwich. He had also been a member of the Norwich Lodge of Elks. A memorial gathering of family and friends will take place at 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 8 at the Church & Allen Funeral Home in Norwich. Burial to be at the convenience of the family.

BATSON, Eli
Death Claims Yet Another
News reached Wiggins by telephone Friday night from Hattiesburg that Eli Batson, aged 61 years, had died there at 7 o'clock that evening. Deceased lived in the county ten miles south of Purvis, but had been taken to the Forrest county city for treatment. He was a brother of our townsman, J.D. Batson, and has many other relatives in Stone county who regret to hear of his call to that bourne from whence no traveler returns.

BROWN, Elizabeth Henze
1929 -- April 29, 2009
Mrs. Elizabeth Henze Brown, 93, of Perkinston, Ms., died Wednesday, April 29, 2009. Mrs. Brown was born in Rusford, Minnesota. She moved to Janice, MS in 1929. She relocated to Big Level in 1930 and attended Big Level High School where she graduated in 1933. She attended cosmetology school in Hattiesburg for a year and began her career as a licensed beautician in Mount Olive, Ms. in 1934. Following this, she opened her Beauty Shop in Wiggins where she continued her career for 73 years until August 2008. In March of 1999, Mrs. Brown received an Achievement Award in celebration of Women's History Month from the New Horizons program of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. In November of 2002, Mrs. Brown was recognized by the Stone Chamber of Commerce for being the county's longest established entrepreneur. In March of 2009, while attending the Breaking Bricks for History ceremony on Pine Hill, Mrs. Brown was recognized by Mayor Jerry Alexander as the oldest attendee present. Mrs. Brown will be remembered for her devoted time to the community and church. She was known for her famous "foot tall cakes." She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, O.B. Brown; a brother, Maynard Henze; grandson, Ryan Parker; and great-grandson, Reese Main. She is survived by three daughters, Kathryn (Donnie) Parker of Perkinston, Linda Mizell of Gautier, and Roxie (Walter) Hatten of Perkinston; eight grandchildren, Lori Griffin, Myla Main, Britt Parker, Todd Parker, Treba Davis, Obey Parker, Nikki Niolet and Troy Mizell; and seven great-grandchildren, Logan Main, Madison Main, Dasha Parker, Cody Parker, Tristen Parker, Kasey Mizell and Christian Mizell. Visitation will be held Friday, May 1, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. at Moore Funeral Home in Wiggins. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at Moore Funeral Home followed by graveside services at the Brown Cemetery in Magnolia Community.

DAVIDSON, Mildred Kathleen Davenport
June 24, 1920 -- November 22, 2007
Mrs. Mildred Kathleen Davenport Davidson, 87 years old of Hammond, died Thursday, November 22, 2007 in North Oaks Medical Center. She was born on Thursday, June 24, 1920 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, daughter of the late Cicero Calvin and Mary Doherty Davenport . Surviving are 2 daughters & sons-in-law, Mary Alice and Thomas Mazzella, Barbara Jean and Ken Martin; son & daughter-in-law, Richard Thomas and Debra Davidson; 6 grandchildren, Thomas Mazzella Jr., Donna Benson, Larry Mazzella, Karen Heaps, Barbara Miller, Bart Davidson; 20 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Rita Cimino. She is preceded in death by her husband, William Thomas Davidson and 1 great-great-granddaughter; 2 sisters, Edith Wells, Alice Roshto; 4 brothers, Calvin, Joe, Dick and George Davenport.
Friends will be received Saturday, November 24, 2007 from 9:00 am until the religious service begins at 11:00 am at the Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Ponchatoula. Interment will follow in the Highland Cemetery in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

DOHERTY, George Martin
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Moore Funeral Chapel in Hattiesburg for George Martin "Jack" Doherty Sr., 72, of Hattiesburg, who died March 18, 2008, in Philadelphia. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Master Sgt. Doherty worked in civil service and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors include his wife, Tempie Doherty of Hattiesburg; four sons, Charles Michael Doherty, George Martin Doherty Jr. and Jeffrey Neal Doherty, all of Hattiesburg, and Kenneth Alan Doherty of Bassfield; a daughter, Charlotte Williamson of Sumrall; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Bounds of Hattiesburg; a brother, William "Bill" Doherty of Hattiesburg; nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Visitation will be from 5:30-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Hattisburg, Miss., Jan. 6 - Mrs. Annie Everett, aged 55 years, died at her home near Irene Chapel Thursday afternoon, after a protracted illness.

Hattiesburg, Miss., Feb. 25 - Mrs. W. A. Johnson, wife of a well-known Baptist minister, who formerly lived at this place, died Thursday afternoon at Bond, Miss. Interment taking place Friday at Green Creek Cemetery.

LAWSON, Annie McGinley
Services were held at 10 a.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for Mrs. Annie McGinley Lawson, 74, of 412 Walnut St., who died Thursday at Forrest General Hospital. Rev. Joseph Mercier, her nephew, officiated at the Requiem Mass. Burial was in Highland Cemetery with Hulett Funeral Home in charge. Pallbearers were Jimmy Bennett, Damon Mercier, Bill Doherty, Joe Davenport, Louis Welch, Jr., and J. C. Lewis. Honorary pallbearers were Joe Forte, Lane Ward, Louis Wells, Philip Ray Davenport, John McGregor, Raymond Coughlin and Sam Farris. Survivors are a son, a sister and two grandchildren.

MERCIER, Albert C.
18 May 1897 -- 25 Jun 1990
Services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Thursday, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hattiesburg for Albert Charles Mercier, 93, of Bay St. Louis who died June 25, 1990, at Hancock Medical Center in Hancock County.

The Rev. John Scanlon and Monsignor Joseph C. Mercier will officiate. Interment will be in Highland Cemetery in Hattiesburg.

Pallbearers will be Casey Mercier, Frank Morgan, Philip Ray Davenport, John M. Debrow, Jimmy Mercier, Adrian G. Mercier, II, and Robert Mercier.

Mercier, a native of Boyd, Wisconsin, was a long time member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and also a member of Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church in Bay St. Louis. He was a retired postal employee as well as an employee for the national Catholic Extension Society where he had been leading salesman.

Mercier was a veteran of WW I having served with the Army. He was a member of the Fourth Knights of Columbus, the Knights of St. Gregory, past president of the WW I's Veterans Association, a member of the Padre Pio Prayer Group and a past president of the Legion of Mary at Our Lady of the Gulf Parrish.

He was preceded in death by a son, Patrick B. Mercier; three brothers, Joseph Mercier, Edward Henry (Hank) Mercier and William Mercier and one sister, Sister Roselda Mercier (Irene Mercier).

Survivors include, his wife, Ella Mae Mercier of Bay St. Louis; six sons, Albert L. Mercier of Bay St. Louis, Monsignor Joseph C. Mercier of Pass Christian, Adrian G. Mercier of Gladwyne, Penn., Damian F. Mercier of Jackson, Delphinis F. Mercier of Havertown, Pennsylvania, and Michael J. Mercier of Long Beach; two daughters, Therese Morgan of Hattiesburg, and Mary Claire Debrow of Houston, Texas; 35 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren; one brother, Clement Mercier of St. Paul, Minnesota, two sisters, Delvina Marsh of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Edna Long of Stanley, Wisconsin.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Moore Funeral Home in Hattiesburg with a rosary at 7 p.m. today.

MOODY, Leroy
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ernestine Presley Moody and his parents.
He is survived by two daughters, Evelyn Moore of Carlton and Barbara Jefferson of Gulfport; two sons, Roy Moody of Atlanta, Ga. and Steve Thompson of Gulfport; four sisters, Burnell Breland Newell of Ellisville, Mary Helen Henderson and Ruby Stokes both of Laurel, Eartha Watson of Hattiesburg; one brother, James Moody of Chicago, Ill.; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Young's Funeral Home in Taylorsville is in charge of arrangements.
