The Rombauer Mine No 1 was located about one mile west of Novinger.  It was a shaft mine, sunk and constructed by a group of stockholders known as the "O.K. Coal Company," in about 1893 or 1894.  The stockholders were Frank Stroup, Noah Stroup, B. Stroup, William Rodcay and a Mr. Evans.  It was constructed on the main line of the Omaha, Kansas City and Eastern Railroad, and known as the "O.K."  Route, and for which the mine was named.  It was not a well equipped mine.  Its shaft was 72 feet deep and its output limited.  In 1897 it was sold to Mr. Major G Rombauer of St. Louis.  He established the Rombauer Coal Company; this became known as Rombauer Mine No. 1.  The new owner increased the output of coal.  It was solid shooting and room and pillar work and used black powder.   Most of the miners lived in Novinger.  The company built houses on penny Royal Hill on the eastern side of the hill.  Penny Royal Hill was the road between Novinger and Danforth and was north of the Celia Hammons' residence. --Cyrus Truitt
