Record
of the Burials in St. Michael’s Cemetery
St.
Michael's Cemetery was established in 1829, on land bought for the church, by
its pastor, Rev. Francis Cellini. And finally deeded to Bishop Rosati, in 1843,
the year of Father Cellini's appointment as Vicar General.
What
an interesting and touching history this hallowed plot of ground could relate,
if all its dead were to come forth from beneath their little mounds.
Forgotten
on earth are now their plans and schemes, their bright hopes and fondest aspirations,
their sorrows and cares and reverses, as well as their successes and triumphs.
Remembered
in eternity alone are their thoughts and words and deeds. One or the other of
our dead may still be enshrined in the memonthsry of surviving friends. But the
great majority is forgotten, as we all shall one day be forgotten on earth.
Yet
the Church, with monthstherly solicitude, preserves the remembrance of all her
children. Their birth and baptism, their first Holy Communion and confirmation,
their marriage and their death and burial are faithfully inscribed on her
records.
It
may be of interest to many of our readers, if I transcribe from the Burial
Records of St. Michael's Church a select number of names of persons that lie at
rest in the old church-yard.
A
complete transcript would, of course, be impossible in these Chronicles.
I
shall begin with the year, 1829. The dead of St. Michael's congregation before
that date lie in the forgotten Catholic Cemeteries at what is called the
Village, and at Old St. Michael's, and the record of these interments is kept
at the ancient parish church of Ste. Genevieve.
Of
the time of Father Cellini I will give the entire list. The fact that a number
of those he buried in St. Michael's church-yard saw the light of day long
before the French Revolution is, in itself, of sufficient interest to warrant
its publication.
Of
the succeeding period of Father Tucker I can select only the most important
names. Of the still later period, from Father Tucker's death to the present
day, I had to forego the pleasure of transcribing all but the monthsst honored
names.
Regretfully,
indeed, for the Records of Burials would, I know, be of interest to the people
for whom these Chronicles were specially written, and perchance also to the
students of our early history even beyond the sound of the bells of St.
Michael's. We hope, the work will be done some day by competent hands.

This
is the last entry made by Father Cellini, in the Record of Burials.
Father
Cellini died in St. Louis, January 6, 1849
His remains lie buried in Calvary
Cemetery. St. Louis
Father Cellini's tombstone bears the
inscription:
"Pray
for the soul of Very Reverend Francis Cellini, Vicar General of the diocese.
He died on the
Feast of the Epiphany."
Father
Cellini's successor was Rev. N. Savelli, 1843—1845.
We
continue with the burial records:

In
1845, the Rev. Lewis Tucker, who from 1834—1835, had been Father Cellini's
assistant, became pastor of St. Michael's congregation and remained until his
death, November 30, 1880, fully 36 years.
As
I stated in the introduction, I can from now on give only a select list,
omitting the great majority of names, especially of children and slaves, as
being of less importance.
I
may also have overlooked a name or two that should have been included. I hope I
have struck the right mean between too little and too much. All names I have
given as they were recorded in the book, even when I knew they were not spelt
correctly, accuracy is the requisite of a transcript. German names especially
were subject to misspelling.
The
names will be readily recognized by attentive readers.
I
will not append name of officiating priest, as Father Tucker invariably
performed the service until his death.

Father
Lewis Tucker died in the month of November 30, 1880. Very Reverend Henry Van
der Sanden, Chancellor of the Archdiocese, being temporarily in charge of the
parish.
November
30, 1880, Mary Budenholzer, Rev. O. J. McDonald.
On
December 2, 1880. I find the following entry:
"The
remains of the Reverend Lewis Tucker, parish priest of the parish of St.
Michael's at Fredericktown, Missouri,
was buried by the Rt. Rev. Patrick John Ryan, Bishop of Tricomia, i. p. i., and
coadjutor to the Most Rev. Peter R. Kenrick, Archbishop of St. Louis, Missouri.
The
following priests assisted the Rt. Rev. Bishop: H. Van der Sanden, Chancellor
of the Archdiocese of St. Louis; Revs. P. McNamee, of De Soto; L. C. Wernert of
Arcadia, Th. Cooney, Iron Mountain.
A
large concourse of people flocked together to show the last respect to their beloved
pastor.
Attest: H. Van
der Sanden, Chancellor."
Father
Tucker's remains were at first buried in the cemetery but, after a little
while, removed to a place beneath St. Joseph's Altar in the church of St.
Michael.
A
simple marble slab in the wall marks the last resting place of "good old
Father Tucker."
Not
far apart they lie at rest the good Father and the children of his love and
care.
"No
dreams disturb their sleep
in the old church yard:
They
hear no kindred weep
in the old church yard.
The
sire with silver hair.
The
mother's heart of care,
The
young, the gay, the fair.
Crowd
the old church yard."
