PEKIN, ILL -- NORMAN RAY ABERNATHY, 82, of Sun City, Ariz., formerly of Peoria, died at 9:50 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, 1997, at Sun Valley Lodge in Sun City.
Born Oct. 18, 1914, in Chaffee, Mo., to Millard and Ruby DeWitt Abernathy, he married Ruth Mary Claire Wampole on June 16, 1937, in Chicago. She died Sept. 20, 1981, in Peoria. He married Edith Levinson on June 25, 1983, in Peoria. She survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. William A. (Norma Jean) Ray of Peoria and Theresa C. Remage of Madisonville, Ky.; one son, James M. of Peoria; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. One brother and one infant granddaughter preceded him in death.
He was a commercial salesman for Shell Oil Co. for 32 years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of the Petroleum Marketers Club.  He was a member of Peoria Elks Lodge 20 and a former member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Peoria.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel in Peoria. The Rev. Thomas Eckhardt will officiate. Visitation will be one hour before services at the chapel. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, West Peoria.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

PORTLAND, OR–WILLIAM R. ADAMS--At his request, no service will be held for William "Bill" R. Adams, who died May 22, 1999, at age 74.
Mr. Adams was born March 7, 1925, in Morley, Mo. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in Europe. He received two Bronze Stars. He began working as a sales representative for Standard Motor Products in Missouri, and the company transferred him to Portland in the early 1960s. He retired in the late 1980s.
Survivors include his sisters, Mary A. Foster of Lompoc, Calif., and Camille Wilson of Pineland, Fla.
Private interment will be in Willamette National Cemetery. Arrangements are by Bateman Carroll Funeral Chapel in Gresham.

Oran, MO--MRS. SUSAN AKLEY, 86 years old, died at her home in Oran Sunday afternoon after an illness of two weeks of pneumonia.  Up to the time she contracted pneumonia, she had been well and active for one of her age.
The body was taken to the H. F. Stubbs Funeral establishment in Chaffee, but was brought back to the residence today.  Funeral services will be held at Guardian Angel Catholic Church here Tuesday morning, the hour not yet having been set.  Burial will be in the Catholic cemetery here.
Mrs. Akley was the widow of Peter Akley, who died in 1904.  She is survived by four sons, Joe Akley of Benton, George Akley of Oran, Charley Akley of Los Angeles, Cal., and Andrew Akley, who operates a cafe in Chaffee; two daughters, Mrs. Mary McMicam of Clarkton and Mrs. Winnie Osley of Montrose, La.  Another daughter was killed in a cyclone in 1925.  --Chaffee Signal, Jan 17, 1935.


PEKIN, IL -- AMELIA M. ALLEN, 83, of 206A Parkway Drive died at 6:50 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, 1993, at Pekin Hospital.
Born April 15, 1910, in Oran, Mo., to Albert and Amelia Waggoner Rockett, she married Gerald L. Allen on Aug. 18, 1928, in Blythesville, Ark. He survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Clarence (Janis) Ward of Champaign and Mrs. Nick (Phyllis A.) Morsch of Pekin; three sons, Dean of Pekin, Jack L. of Lakeland, Fla., and Donald R. of Davenport, Iowa; two sisters, Laura Owens of Blythesville and Estella Watson of St. Louis; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. One son, Monroe, three brothers, five sisters and one grandson preceded her in death.
She attended First Baptist Church in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Private services will be Wednesday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Home. The Rev. Robert Mead will officiate. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the Leukemia Foundation.

Oran, MO--FRANCIS ALLEN, aged 23 years, died at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Allen, shortly before 12 o'clock last Sunday night of pneumonia, which he contracted only a few days ago.
He was a member of Oran camp No. 548 Woodmen of the World, and the members of said Camp took charge of the funeral and carried his remains in solemn procession to the Iron Mountain depot to be shipped to Lafflin, his former home, for burial.  As pall bearers acted:  J. E. Stone, J. J. Porter, Perry Elder, Amos Evans, J. W. Royer, Howard Evans, E. L. Hyne, Jess Reeves, L. R. Terry, E. Inglehardt, G. Herby, who accompanied the remains to Lafflin.  In the procession were also consul Commander Ernest Mantel, Adv. Lieutenant John Brann and Camp Clerk Adolph Schaefer.  The Woodman of the World lost an ardent member.  May he rest in peace.
The parents of the deceased have the sympathy of this Journal and the people of Oran who know of their sad loss.  --Scott County Citizen, January 24, 1908.


SCOTT CITY -- Funeral service for CHARLEY "LEE" ANDERSON of Scott City will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at First Baptist Church in Chaffee. The Revs. Kenneth Roberts and Gerald Collier will officiate, with burial in Memorial Park in Cape Girardeau.
    Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel at Chaffee is in charge of arrangements.
    Anderson, 86, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 1996, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.
    He was born Sept. 21, 1910, in Arkansas, son of Henry and Rebecca Anderson. He married Lela Husk, who died in 1966. He and Ethel Crump Jamerson were married June 22, 1968.
    Anderson retired as a dispatcher with Missouri Utilities Co. in Cape Girardeau. He was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church in Chaffee and member of Gideon International.
    Survivors include his wife; two sons, Charles Anderson of Cape Girardeau and Howard Anderson of Denver; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by a son, sister and eight brothers.

Moreno Valley, CA-Services for F. OPAL ANDERSON, 83, will be at noon Wednesday at Moreno Valley Congregational Church. She died Sept. 30 at Riverside Community Hospital. The cause of death is undetermined pending a doctor's report.
Friends may call Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Akes Family Funeral Home in Riverside.
Burial will be in Riverside National Cemetery.
Mrs. Anderson, who was born in Scott County, Mo., lived in Moreno Valley 22 years. She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Moreno Valley Congregational Church.
Mrs. Anderson is survived by her husband, Donald; two sons, Arthur and Eric, both of Seal Beach; and two grandchildren.

Oran, MO--HAZEL MAE ANTHONY, 92, of Oran died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008, at the Chaffee Nursing Center in Chaffee, Mo.  She was born Oct. 6, 1915, at Lamar, Ark., daughter of Fred and Alberta Bradley Harmon.  She married Bernard "B. W." Anthony on July 19, 1935, and he preceded her in death April 12, 1993, after 58 years of marriage.  They moved to Southeast Missouri in December 1936.
Anthony was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Oran.
Survivors include three sons, William Lee Anthony of Selma, Ala., Kenneth Gene Anthony of Grantville, Kan., and Fredie Wayne Anthony of Derby, Kan.; one daughter, Betty Perry of Kinmundy, Ill.; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Imogene Uptain of Concord, Calif., and Josephine Tate of Oran; two brothers, Fred Harmon of Portageville, Mo. and Bob Harmon of Phoenix, Ariz.  She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.
The funeral was Tuesday, Feb. 12, at First Baptist Church in Oran, with the Rev. Ed Carter officiating.  Burial was in Friend Cemetery at Oran.


BROOKSVILLE, FL–JOSEPH C. ARNEY, 82, of High Point, Brooksville, died Monday (Feb. 9, 1987) at Lykes Memorial Hospital. Born in Morley, Mo., he came here nine years ago from Skokie, Ill., and was a retired foreman. He was a Catholic.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas and Patrick, both of Chattanooga, Tenn.; a sister Loretta Sagester, Peoria, Ariz.; three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

LAS VEGAS, NV–HELEN M. ARTHUR, 73, of Las Vegas died Tuesday in Las Vegas. She was born Sept. 30, 1924, in Morley, Mo. A resident for seven years, she was a former ceramics teacher for the blind and most recently a slot attendant for 5 1/2 years.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Fred Sr.; two daughters, Bonnie Massey of Hot Springs, Ark., and Jackie Hines of St. Louis; four sons, Ronald Arthur of Eolia, Mo., Frederick Arthur Jr. and Robert Arthur, both of St. Louis, and Donald Arthur of Las Vegas.

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO--FLOYD C. "JACK" ATES, 77, died May 6, 1998, at a local care center. He was a retired civil service worker and had served in the Air Force for 26 years.
Mr. Ates was born March 2, 1921, in Oran, Mo. He was married Dec. 1, 1946, to Betty June Houston.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Dave; a daughter, Karen L. Love; three brothers, Ellis R. "Bing," Jeff Jr. and Leroy D.; and three grandchildren.
Memorial services and reception will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Bible Church, 865 Westmoreland Road. Private burial is planned. Swan Law Funeral Directors, 501 N. Cascade Ave., 471-9900, is handling arrangements.

PORTLAND, ME--MIRIAM M. ATWOOD, 75, died Saturday at the home of her son on Maple Street. She was formerly of Bar Mills, (ME).
She was born in Fornfelt, Mo., a daughter of Edgar and Elizabeth Welsch Manley. She attended Dupo, Ill., public schools and the University of Southern Illinois.
Mrs. Atwood had been a homemaker most of her life. She enjoyed music and playing the piano.
Her husband, William E. Atwood, died in 1989.
She is survived by a son, William L. Schweickhardt of Cornish; two grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
A graveside service will be held at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements are by the York Funeral Chapel, Standish (ME).

KANSAS CITY, MO–ROBERT M. AUBUCHON SR., 78, northeast Kansas City, died Dec. 13, 1991, at North Kansas City Hospital. He was born in Chaffee, Mo., and lived in Poplar Bluff, Mo., before moving to Kansas City in 1950.
Mr. AuBuchon was a pipe fitter for the Missouri Pacific Railroad for 37 years before he retired. He was a member of the United Steel Workers of America. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Kansas City, and the Catholic Knights of America. He was a 50-year member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of its Cardinal Glennon Council.
Survivors include his wife, Clara AuBuchon of the home; two sons, Larry AuBuchon, Apache Junction, Ariz., and Robert AuBuchon Jr., Sullivan, Mo.; three daughters, Betty AuBuchon, Hazelwood, Mo., Ruth McLaughlin, Princeton, N.J., and Carol AuBuchon, Elkhart, Ind.; three brothers, Louis AuBuchon and Theodore AuBuchon of Poplar Bluff, and George AuBuchon, Athens, Ala.; a sister, Anna Davi, Poplar Bluff; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church; burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Raytown. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Sheil Independence Avenue Chapel, where the rosary will be said at 7 p.m.

SCOTT CITY, Mo. - WILLARD E. AUSTIN, 75, of Scott City died Wednesday, March 4, 1998, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Mo. He was born in McLean County, was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II and retired as an engineer from Inland Oil Co.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys Austin; five daughters, Marcia Ann Abney of Calhoun, Dora Ellen Austin of Hardinsburg, Connie Sue Coomes of Aurora, Ill., Yolonna Jo Davis of Pekin, Ill., and Karen Faye Holloway of Scott City; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City. Burial will be in Lightner Cemetery in Scott City. Visitation is after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Sikeston, MO.--WILMA D. AUSTIN, 86, of Sikeston died Tuesday, April 24, 2007 at Pacific Care in Pacific, MO.  She was born July 12, 1920 in Knoble, AR, daughter of William E. and Nellie Wiseman Brown.  She and Freeman Austin were married April 20, 1940 in Corning, AR.  He died Feb. 12, 1988.  Austin had been a cook at Sheehy's IGA in Sikeston and Running Horse Cafe in Morehouse, MO.  She was a member of Calvary Temple.  Survivors include a son, David Austin of St. Charles, MO; two daughters, Joan Faulkner of Pacific and Pattie Agee of Benton, MO; a sister, Jean Austin of Brier, Wash.; 17 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by a son, a brother and four sisters.  Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Garden of Memories Cemetery.  The Rev. Larry Davis will officiate.  Ponder Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
