SCOTT CITY, MO - MICHAEL JOSEPH BACKFISCH, SR., 53, died Dec. 13, 2001, at his home.
Born April 26, 1948, in Cape Girardeau, son of the late Joseph Lawrence and Lucille Rose Halter Backfisch, he was service manager for Ford Groves in Cape Girardeau and a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in New Hamburg.
Survivors include: one son, Michael Backfisch Jr. of New Hamburg; one daughter, Michelle Backfisch of New Hamburg; three brothers, Harold Backfisch of Benton and Jerome Backfisch and Vincent Backfisch of New Hamburg; two sisters, Mary Ann Chaney of Bethalto, Ill., and Therese Ansberry of Cedar Hill, Tenn.; two grandchildren; and a special friend, Marcia Abernathy of Cape Girardeau.
Friends may call after 4 p.m. Sunday at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City, where a prayer service is scheduled for 6 p.m.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church with the Rev. Normand Varone officiating.
Burial will follow in the St. Lawrence Cemetery at New Hamburg.
Pallbearers will be: Ron Oller, Tom Halter Jr., Danny Stotts, Charlie Wilson, Paul Hendrickson, Kyle Enderle and Jim McDonough.

LEOMINSTER, MA - DOROTHY (MASTERSON) BADAGLIACCA, 69, of 1476 Main St., died yesterday in University of Massachusetts Hospital, Worcester, after a short illness.
She leaves her husband of 51 years, Paul Badagliacca; a daughter, Janet Badagliacca of Leominster; two sisters, Faye Phillips of Oran, Mo., and Margaret Kasting of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; nephews and nieces. Born in Sikeston, Mo., daughter of Earl and Mildred (Litchfield) Masterson, she lived most of her life in Leominster.
Mrs. Badagliacca was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Church and had attended St. Boniface Church in Lunenburg.
The funeral will be held Saturday from M.A. Simard & Son Funeral Home, 14 Walker St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Lake Church, 1400 Main St. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Fitchburg. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral home.

CAPE GIRARDEAU — BRIELLA RACHELLE BAILEY, infant daughter of Robert A. and Ramona S. Robinson Bailey of Cape Girardeau, died Tuesday, April 27, 2010, in St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Crain Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau. Interment will be in Lightner Cemetery in Scott City. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

CAIRO, ILL--NELLIE BAILEY, age 99, of Cairo, died Sunday afternoon, July 5, 2009 in Olive Branch, Ill.
She was born Aug. 18, 1909 in Diehlstadt, Mo., daughter of the late John Dudley and Elvia Jane Miller Nichols.
She was married to Walsh Bailey, who preceded her in death, and was a member of Tigert Memorial United Methodist Church in Cairo.
She was employed as a waitress for the former Keller and Lee’s Restaurant in Cairo before her retirement.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Bailey was preceded in death by five brothers; one sister; and several cousins.
Mrs. Bailey is survived by her sister-in-law, Amma Nichols of Memphis, Tenn.; one cousin, Chesley Willis of Miller City; and other relatives.
Visitation was held at the Barkett Funeral Home in Cairo, where friends called from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, 2009.
Graveside funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at Wickliffe Cemetery in Wickliffe, Ky. with Rev. Kelly Cox officiating. Interment followed.

MANITO, IL -- MELVIN EARL BAKER, 56, of 7910 Edgemont Road, Greers Ferry, Ark., formerly of Winfield Estates in rural Manito, died at 11:25 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, 1996, at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock, Ark.
Born June 13, 1940, in Chaffee, Mo., to Earl and Audrey Young Baker, he married Delores Cook on Nov. 27, 1973, in Pekin (IL). She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Jayson Hedrick of Pekin and Jeff Baker of Marquette Heights; two daughters, Mrs. Ron (Sandra) Gore of Pekin and Mrs. Bret (Taunya) Counterman of Pekin; five grandchildren; and one brother, Roy Lee of East Peoria.
He worked for American Distillery in Pekin for 21 years. He later was a millwright for Quaker Oats Co. in Pekin for 12 years, retiring in 1993. For the last three years, he was the owner of Narrows Inn and Restaurant in Greers Ferry.
He was of the Pentecostal faith.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Noel-Henderson Funeral Home in Pekin. The Rev. Eugene Hooker will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin.

Sikeston, MO.--CURTIS D. BARNETT, 65, of Sikeston died Saturday, Aug. 15, 1992 at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.  He was born Feb. 25, 1927 at Tuckerman, AR, the son of John and Elsie Gray Barnett.  On Jan. 8, 1945, he married Violet Hanshew in Bloomfield, MO.  She survives.  For 25 years he worked as a foreman in the press room at the Sikeston Cotton Oil Mill.  Other survivors include a son, Dewayne Barnett of rural Benton, MO; a daughter, Liz Ferrell of Sikeston; a brother, Jimmy Barnett of New Madrid, MO; a sister, Gladys Taylor of Cave City, AR; and six grandchildren.  He also was preceded in death by a son and a brother.  Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel in Sikeston, where funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday (Aug 18, 1992).  The Rev. Marvin Butrum and the Rev. Jesse Thomas will officiate, and burial will be in the New Morley Cemetery in Morley, MO.


BENTON - MAURICE BEARDSLEE, 86, died at 12:38 p.m. Oct. 21, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
Born Nov. 7, 1914, in Oran, son of the late Paul and Frances Groves Beardslee, he was a mechanic for Chrysler Auto in Detroit, Mich., before retiring and was a member of the Benton Methodist Church.
On June 18, 1940, at Detroit, he married Elizabeth Garber who survives of the home.
Other survivors include: one son, Thomas A. Beardslee of Benton; one brother, Charles Beardslee of Cincinnati, Ohio; and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, two brothers and two sisters.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City, where services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. Karen Taylor, officiating.

CHAFFEE, MO--ALPHA LEONA BECHEL, 100, of Chaffee died Thursday, Feb 21, 2008 at Jackson Manor in Jackson, MO.  She was born Aug. 24, 1907 in Chaffee, daughter of Levi John and Elenora Elizabeth Scheeter Bechel.
Bechel worked for many years in Louisville, KY, and retired as a secretary at International Shoe Co. in St. Louis.  She was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church and the Daughters of St. Ambrose.  Bechel was the first baby baptized at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Chaffee.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Mabel Stehr and Juanita Bechel.  Survivors include two nieces, Linda Patterson (Wayne) of Oran, MO, Jean Ann Diebold of Gladstone, MO; a nephew, Larry (Pam) Stehr of St. Louis; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Friends may call at 9:00 a.m. Monday until the time of Mass at St. Ambrose Catholic Church.  Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. at St. Ambrose Catholic Church with Rev. Ralph Duffner as celebrant.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.


Colorado Springs, CO--VIRGINIA I. BECHT, 73, died Nov. 4, 1995, at St. Mary's Cathedral in Colorado Springs. She was a homemaker.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mary's Cathedral, 22 W. Kiowa St., with the Rev. Ted Haas officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery near Denver.
Mrs. Becht was born May 2, 1922, in New Hamburg, Mo., to John and Agnes (Gluck) Scherer. She was married June 7, 1959, in Golden to George Becht, who survives.
She is also survived by a son, Harold of Westminster; a sister, Agnes Pobst of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; and two grandchildren.

KEWANEE, IL -- SARAH MYRTLE BIRDSELL, 83, formerly of Kewanee, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1993, at Sterling Pavilion in Sterling, (IL).
Born Feb. 17, 1910, in Chaffee, Mo., to Alonzo and Mary Lee Lee, she married Johnnie B. Carroll on April 16, 1927, in Kewanee. He died Feb. 9, 1967. Five brothers also preceded her in death.
Surviving are two sons, Donald Carroll of Sterling and Harold Carroll of Annawan (IL); one daughter, Mrs. John (Juanita) Ainley of Green Rock (IL); two sisters, Alice Parker of Kewanee and Mrs. Harry (Nonie) Hand of Sheffield (IL); 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was a member of Church of the Nazarene in Kewanee.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rux Funeral Home in Kewanee. The Rev. Dr. H.C. Hatton will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Memory Gardens.

CHAFFEE, MO - CECELIA ELIZABETH BISHER, 82, died at 4 a.m. Aug. 23, 2001. Born Aug. 18, 1919, in Oran to the late George John and Amanda Helen Schwartz Gosche, she was a retired machine sewing operator for Thorngate LTD in Chaffee. A member of the St. Ambrose Catholic Church, she was also a member of the Daughters of St. Ambrose.
On Oct. 11, 1941, she married Leon Patrick Bisher who survives of the home.
Other survivors include: three daughters, Pat LeGrand of Benton, Jane Landewee of Scott City and Alice Vandeven of Cape Girardeau; two brothers, Monsignor Joseph E. Gosche and Ralph Gosche of Cape Girardeau; one sister, Isabelle Kappler of Sikeston; and 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four grandchildren.
Friends may call after 4 p.m. Friday at the Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Chaffee where parish prayers will be recited at 7 p.m. Friday.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at the St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Chaffee with the Rev. Ralph Duffner officiating.

Benton, Mo--SAUNDRA KAY BLANKENSHIP, 44, of Benton died Tuesday, Oct 7, 2008 at her home.  She was born July 30, 1964 in Cape Girardeau, MO, daughter of Gary Jerriett and Carolyn Jean Young Wright.  She and Ricky Keith Blankenship were married Aug. 19, 1985 at Commerce, Mo.
Blankenship was employed by the American Red Cross.  She was a member of Christian Mission.
Survivors include her husband; her mother of Scott City; a daughter, Beth Marshall of Gordonville; two brothers, Alan and Cleo Wright of Commerce; a sister, Vicki Carroll of Scott City; and a stepgrandson.  She was preceded in death by her father and a brother.

BATON ROUGE, LA–CLARICE P. (MRS. JOE R.) BLANTON--A resident of Baton Rouge, she died Sunday, Feb. 2, 1997, at Baton Rouge General Medical Center. She was 86 and a native of Chaffee, Mo.
Visiting at Welsh Funeral Home, 6700 Florida Blvd., 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, and 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church at noon Wednesday, celebrated by the Rev. Chris Haydel. Burial in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Survived by a sister-in-law, Noni Cooley; three nieces, Polly Page Hart, Atlanta, Terri Beaucoudray, Baton Rouge, and Jill Page Beebe, Shreveport. Preceded in death by husband, Joe R. SCOTT CITY, MO - FRED JOSEPH “FRITZ” BLES, 86, died at 8:44 p.m. Jan. 12, 2002, at the St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
Born Nov. 1, 1915, in Commerce, son of the late Ambrose and Mary Theresa Hess Bles, he was a blaster with West Lake Quarry. A member of the U.S. Army during World War II, he was a member of Veterans of Foreign War Post 6407 in Scott City.
On July 16, 1960, at Sikeston he married Llolav Summers, who preceded him in death on Jan. 16, 1995.
Other survivors include a stepdaughter, Mary Helen Vetter of Commerce; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City where services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Olive Clavin will officiate.

CARLOCK, IL-- MRS. OLIVE LOUISE  BOHANNON, age 71, of 203 E. Cobleigh, Carlock, IL 61725, passed away at 12:30 a.m. Monday, March 20, 2006, at BroMenn Regional Medical Center in Normal, Ill.
Her graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Onarga Cemetery in Onarga, Ill. The Rev. Gloria Hernandez will officiate. Her visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Otto-Argo-Calvert Memorial Home in Carlock, Ill.
She was born May 6, 1934, in Blogett, Mo., the daughter of Chap and Ruby Loretta Bonifield Myers. She married Harold Buford Bohannon Sr. on Feb. 21, 1953, in Pocahontas, Ark. He survives.
Also surviving are four sons, Harold Buford Jr. (Julia) Bohannon of Bloomington, Ill., Raymond Bohannon of Clinton, Ill., James (Deanne) Bohannon of Pekin, Ill., and Kevin (Nancy) Bohannon of Carlock, Ill.; one sister, Loretta Henley of Sikeston, Mo.; one brother, Bob (Mickey) Myers of East Peoria, Ill.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Lewis; four brothers; her twin sister and one granddaughter.

Boley, 66 years old, of Vanduser, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 1987 at Chaffee General Hospital.  She was born in Lamar, Ark., on April 19, 1921, daughter of Ernest and Jettie Crotts Tanner.  She was a member of the Church of Christ Church at Morley.
She married Ross Boley on June 12, 1938.  He survives.

DENAIR, CA–CHARLES LESLIE BOND, 83, of Denair died Friday (June 4, 1999) at Turlock Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Turlock.
Mr. Bond was a native of Chaffee, Mo, (born Dec 1, 1915). He had lived in Denair since 1986 and previously lived in Turlock six years. He was a bus mechanic and driver for Denair School District for many years.
He is survived by his son, Virgil Cleaver of Payette, Idaho; brother, Glenn Bond of Essex, Mo.; and six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Allen Mortuary, Turlock. Burial will follow at Turlock Memorial Park, Turlock. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.

Born Sept. 21, 1956, in Cape Girardeau, daughter of the late Arthur Clifford and Melba Melinda Rhodes Hamil, she had been a clerk for Heilig-Meyer.
Survivors include: one son, Michael "Boomer" Brawley of Cape Girardeau; two daughters, Hope York and Shawna Maglone of Cape Girardeau; one sister, Myrna Hale of Elizabethtown, Ky.; and three grandchildren.

Denver, CO--THELMA BOMER BRITTAIN, 87, of Denver died Feb. 10 (1999). Services were Feb. 16. Mrs. Brittain was born Thelma Bomer in Oran, Mo., on Nov. 23, 1911. She married Elmer Brittain, 1936. She was the administrator for many years at Grace Episcopal Church in Colorado Springs. MARIETTA, GA–ELIZABETH BRITTON, 78, of Marietta died Tuesday, May 12.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Roswell Street Baptist Church in Marietta, with the Rev. Nelson Price officiating. Burial will be in Cheatham Hill Memorial Park. The body will be at the church at 1 p.m.
A Scott County, Mo., native, Ms. Britton moved to Cobb County in 1961. She was a member of Roswell Baptist Church, at which she was a Sunday School and kindergarten teacher.
Survivors include her husband, Wilbur Britton; two daughters, Martha Hamner of Clinton, Tenn., and Babs Kelley of Marietta; one son, Randall Thomas Britton of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; her mother, Anna Dorris of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; one sister, Martha Lou Bray of Cape Girardeau; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

CHAFFEE, MO--JOYCE ANN BROWN, 71, of Chaffee died Monday, Feb. 4, 2008 at Chaffee Nursing Center.  She was born June 20, 1936 at New Hamburg, MO, daughter of Leo and Agnes Simpher Goetz.  She and Robert Michael Welter were married July 28, 1956.  He died Dec. 19, 1986.  She and Bob Brown were married May 14, 1995.
Brown retired as a machine operator from Thorngate Ltd. in Chaffee.  She was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church and Daughters of St. Ambrose.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Darrell Welter of Scott City; a sister, Ruth Glaus of Cape Girardeau; and a grandson of Scott City.  She was preceded in death by her parents.
The funeral was Thursday, Feb. 7 at St. Ambrose Church, with the Rev. Ralph Duffner officiating.  Burial was in St. Ambrose Cemetery.


SIKESTON -- ROBERT A. BROWN, 19, of Route 1 Sikeston, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, at the Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.
    He was born Sept. 14, 1978, in Cape Girardeau, son of Robert Lee and Jeris Jean Glueck Brown.
    Brown was employed as a machine operator at the Vess Supply Company in Sikeston. He had played on the basketball team at Scott County Central High School.
    In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother, Frank Brown of Sikeston; one sister, Robin Ogden, of Benton, and several nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by a brother, Timothy Brown.
    Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Nunnelee Funeral Chapel in Sikeston.
    Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral chapel, with the Rev. Marvin Butrum officiating. Burial will follow in New Morley Cemetery at Morley.

BLYTHEVILLE, AR - ESTHER DENT BROWNE, 99, of Scott City, Mo., formerly of Blytheville, died of heart disease Friday at Deal Nursing Home in Jackson, Mo. Services were Saturday at Cobb Funeral Home with burial in Maple Grove Cemetery.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Browne, the widow of E. J. Browne, leaves a son, Dent Browne of Scott City, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Fairview Heights, IL–CATHERINE IRENE BROWNING, 95, of Fairview Heights, Ill., born June 16, 1912, in Commerce, Mo., died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2007, at Four Fountains Convalescent Center in Belleville, Ill.
Mrs. Browning was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ in East St. Louis, Ill., the Eastern Star, Grand Chapter of Kentucky, and she was a 25 year member of Local 78, Meat Cutters Union. Catherine became an avid quilter and embroiderer after her retirement in 1966, from Swift & Company at National Stockyards, Ill. She was our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and soon to be great-great-grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Fay W. Browning, who died in 1988; a son, Robert E. Browning; her parents, Robert L. and Effie M. Rasberry; and three brothers, Robert, Leroy and Ernest Rasberry.
Surviving are her son, Paul L. (Nancy) Browning of Belleville, Ill.; her daughters, Anagene Chor of Fairview Heights, Ill., and Kathleen (Donald) Wisner of Belleville, Ill.; nine grandchildren, Jack E. (Joan) Browning of Belleville, Ill., Paul J. (Julie) Chor MD of Webster Groves, Mo., Marianne (Michael) Penn of Belleville, Ill., David (Kelly Caldwell-Chor MD) of Racine, Wis., Jason (Cynthia) Chor of O'Fallon, Ill., Margaret (Edward) Simsons of Belleville, Ill., Catherine F. Browning of Fairview Heights, Ill., Rebecca (Jude) Schaeffler of Florissant, Mo., and Robert P. (Pamela) Wisner of Priceville, Ala.; her great-grandchildren, Jack, Elizabeth and Martin Chor, Allen Burdge, Michelle, Jennifer and Michael Penn, Cassandra Chor, Anna Rose and Caitlyn Chor, Kyle and Jeffrey Quellmalz, Stephanie, Paul E. (Sara) and Catherine Simonson, Emily and Timothy Schaeffler, and Andrew and Alex Wisner; a former son-in-law, Jack E. Chor of Belleville, Ill.; numerous nieces and nephews.

Scott City, MO--BOBBY PAUL BRUCE, 67, of Scott City died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008 at Life Care Center in Cape Girardeau, MO.  He was born April 22, 1940 in Dunklin County, MO, son of Joseph Wheeler and Mattie Lou Brake Bruce.
Bruce worked in the janitor and shipping departments at Blair Industries.
Survivors include a brother, Perry Bruce of Scott City; and two sisters, Jessie Vanderbol of Campbell, MO, and Hilda Hoskins of Scott City.  He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.
The funeral was Friday, Jan. 4, 2008 at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City with the Rev. Randy Morse officiating.  Burial was in Lightner Cemetery.


MELVIN, IL - The Funeral of JEFF T. BRYEANS, 85, of Melvin will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Lamb-Young Funeral Home, Roberts. The Rev. Roger Ross will officiate. Burial will be in Lyman Township Cemetery, Roberts. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mr. Bryeans died at 1:55 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 30, 1993) at Gibson Community Hospital, Gibson City.
He was born March 13, 1908, in Oran, Mo., a son of Frank and Hettie Thompson Bryeans. He married Elsie Whittington on May 29, 1930, in Benton, Mo. She died Aug. 12, 1979.
Survivors include two sons, Robert and Jerry, both of Tulsa, Okla.; a daughter, Norma Thompson, Melvin; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
A brother and a sister preceded him in death.
Mr. Bryeans farmed in the Melvin area for many years.

SIKESTON, MO - JACK TORRENCE BURNETT, 78, formerly of Chaffee, died Sept. 3, 2001, at the John J. Pershing Veterans Administration Hospital in Poplar Bluff.
Born March 29, 1923, in Chaffee, son of Harvey and Jessie Marie Litzelfelner Burnett, he married Mildred Rose Schlitt Graviett on May 13, 1978, in Sikeston.
Jack joined the Citizen Military Training Camp in St. Louis on Aug. 3, 1939. In December 1940, it was nationalized into the 138th Infantry of St. Louis and was mobilized at Camp Robinson, where he received his basic training. He was sent to Alaska where he served 11 months and returned to the states to enter OCS at Fort Benning, Ga.
Upon completion, he was an instructor in Infantry Training at Fort Fennin, Texas. He then joined the 10th Mountain Division in Colorado and with this Division he was sent to Italy, where he served 10 months. While serving there, he was wounded and received the Purple Heart. Jack was awarded the Silver Star Medal for gallantry in action. He was discharged Nov. 7, 1945, from active duty, but remained in the National Guard. Other citations and decorations received were the Combat Infantry Badge, EAME Ribbon with two Bronze Service Stars, the ATC Ribbon and World War II Victory Medal.
Jack was recalled to active duty Nov. 12, 1950, to serve in the 2nd Infantry Division in Korea, where he was wounded and received a second Purple Heart. On April 20, 1950, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Heroic Achievement. He was discharged from active duty on March 6, 1952, receiving the Distinguished Unit Citation, Combat Infantry Badge with a star and the Korean Service Medal. He remained in the National Guard until being discharged from the U.S. Army on June 18, 1958.
He graduated from the College of Mortuary Science in 1946, along with his future business partner, Ollie Amick. The men went to work for Bispling-Hoff Funeral Homes in Chaffee and Scott City. In 1955, Jack and Ollie purchased the business.
In 1960, they built and expanded the business to Benton and in 1964 they purchased the Earl J. Smith Funeral Home in Oran. The name of the business was changed to Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapels in 1978 and in 1987, they purchased the Throop Funeral Home in Sikeston. They continued to operate the funeral business until their retirement in 1989, when their sons, Jack Burnett, Mark Amick and Scott Amick purchased the business.
Jack was also very active in local civic affairs. In 1979 he was recognized for 20 years of service in assisting in the development of the Chaffee Youth Leagues baseball program. A member of the Missouri Funeral Directors Association, where he served as president of the Southeast District, he was also a member of Chaffee Masonic Lodge 615, Morley Order of the Eastern Star, Moolah Shrine Temple of St. Louis, the Semo Shrine Club and Scottish Rite of St. Louis.
A member of the Chaffee Rotary Club and a recipient of its Paul Harris Fellow Award, he was also a member of Chaffee Elks Lodge 1810, Chaffee American Legion Post 389, Chaffee VFW Post 3127, a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Sikeston.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Burnett of Sikeston; one son, Jack L. Burnett of Chaffee; one daughter, Janie Pfefferkorn of Sikeston; two stepsons, Ron Graviett of Bloomfield and Tom Graviett of Lewisville, Texas; six grandchildren, Molly Noe, Corrie Pfefferkorn, Abby Pfefferkorn and Maggie Pfefferkorn, Jessie Vollink and Sam Burnett; eight stepgrandchildren, Elaine Causevic, Amanda Mullin, DaRonda Graviett, Jeremy Graviett, Aunna Graviett, Lydia Graviett, Thomas Graviett and Michael Graviett; two great-grandchildren, Kylie Noe and Brylie Noe; and three stepgreat-grandchildren, Madyson Barnes and Vivian Causevic and Loren Causevic; two brothers, Jim Burnett of Miles City, Mont., and John Burnett of Columbus, Ohio; and three sisters, Carolyn Whitfield and Mary Hindman of Chaffee and Betty Kennedy of St. Michaels, Md.
His parents and two brothers, Robert L. Burnett and Joseph H. Burnett, preceded him in death.
Friends may call after 4 p.m. Wednesday at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Chaffee, where a parish prayer service is scheduled for 7 p.m.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Chaffee. Concelebrants will be the Rev. Mike McDevitt and the Rev. Ralph Duffner. Burial will follow in Union Park Cemetery at Chaffee with military graveside honors.

VANDUSER, MO - ALVIE J. BURTON, 89, died Nov. 8, 2001, at the Clearview Nursing Center in Sikeston.
Born April 26, 1912, in Buttermilk, Ark., son of the late S.W. and Mary Miranda Burton, he was a self-employed farmer and of the Baptist belief.
On Aug. 16, 1969, he married Carol Reynolds who survives of the home.
Other survivors include: three sons, Gene Burton of Cape Girardeau, Lester Burton of Tyler, Texas, and Charles "Paul" Burton of St. Louis; five daughters, Dorothy Haupt of Egypt Mills, Bonnie Bowers of Delta, Bonita Sanders of Matthews and Patty Sexton and Kristy Shultz of Sikeston; one sister, Inus Duvall of Russellville, Ark.; and 17 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Kathleen Burton; and three brothers; and one sister.
Friends may call from noon Saturday until service time at 2 p.m. at Ponder Funeral Home in Sikeston. The Rev. Dale Huff will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Unity Cemetery at Benton.

Sikeston, MO--ROSE J. BUSH, 99, of Sikeston died Monday, Jan 7, 2008 at Sikeston Convalescent Center in Sikeston.  She was born March 18, 1908 at New Hamburg, MO, daughter of Peter and Catherine Messmer Kielhofner.  She and Raymond Bush were married in 1940 in Phoenix.  He died Sept. 23, 1980.
Formerly of Cape Girardeau and Chaffee, MO, she was a 1924 graduate of Chaffee High School.  Bush was a secretary and obituary page editor at the Los Angeles Daily Examiner.  She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Sikeston.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters.  
The funeral Mass was Wednesday, Jan 9, 2008 at St. Augustine Catholic Church at Kelso, MO, with the Rev. Oliver Clavin officiating.  Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery in St. Louis.  Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City was in charge of arrangements.


DENTON, TX - HELEN MAY BUTLER of Denton, a homemaker, died Saturday at a Denton hospital. She was 86.
Rosary will be said at 7 tonight at Etlinger Funeral Home in Sealy. Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sealy. Burial will be at the Catholic cemetery in Sealy.
Coker Funeral Home in Sanger is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Butler was born in Benton, Mo., and had lived in Denton for about 10 years. She was a Roman Catholic.
Survivors: Two daughters, Carolyn Ann Smith of Austin and Marylin Head of Houston; two sons, William P. Butler of Houston and Ade Butler of Sanger; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

SCOTT CITY, Mo. – THOMAS DAVID BUTTREY, 65, of Scott City died Friday, July 14, 2000, at St. Luke's Hospital in Chesterfield, Mo.  He was born June, 11, 1935, at Illmo, Mo., son of John and Beatrice Jenkins Buttrey.  He and Betty Hopkms were married May 4 1957, in Kelso, Mo. 
He had served in the U.S. Army.  He had worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Cape Girardeau for 33 years as a distribution clerk. He was affiliated with St. Joseph Catholic Church and was a member of the American Postal Workers Union. He was an Associate of the Precious Blood and Minister of the Eucharist at St. Joseph Catholic Church. 
Survivors include his wife; four sons, David Buttrey of Sedro Wooley, Wash., John Buttrey of Cape Girardeau, Matthew Buttrey of Scott City, and Richard Buttrey of Council Grove, Kan.; 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild. 
Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Parish prayers will be held at 7p.m. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. David Coon officiating.  Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Scott City.
